Here's the message:
On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2012. You stood out as one of the most talented and promising students in one of the most competitive applicant pools in the history of the Institute. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals has convinced us that you will both contribute to our diverse community and thrive within our academic environment. We think that you and MIT are a great match.
You’ll likely have offers of admission from many fine schools, but we hope that you’ll choose to enroll at MIT. You have until May 1, 2008 to let us know if you’ll call MIT home for the next four years – please visit your MyMIT account to complete our official Reply Form. Until then, we look forward to building our relationship with you and to helping you to get to know us better. In the coming weeks, we’ll be in touch via phone, email, and web.
Many of our students believe that the campus visit experience was the deciding factor in their choice to enroll at MIT. Therefore, we hope you will be our guest at Campus Preview Weekend (CPW), held on the MIT campus from Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13. CPW is an excellent way to experience MIT student life firsthand. You’ll go to classes, eat lots of food, join hallway conversations, and meet your future classmates. We encourage your parents to attend as well; please see the enclosed CPW invitation for details.
If you can’t come to CPW, please try to visit campus before May 1. To make arrangements to stay overnight with an undergraduate host, simply complete the online request form in your MyMIT account. If you are unable to visit campus but eager to get to know MIT, you’ll have the chance to speak with a current undergraduate soon; an MIT student will be calling you in April.
And now for the requisite fine print – I must remind you that this offer of admission is contingent upon your completing the school year with flying colors. Have fun with the rest of your senior year, but please keep your grades up!
I hope you’ll agree with us that MIT is the perfect place to prepare for your future. As a member of our community, you’ll join builders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and humanitarians. Together, you will make all the difference in a world that desperately needs you.
Many congratulations, and once again, welcome to MIT! (Now stop reading this and go celebrate.
Sincerely,
Stuart Schmill
Interim Director of Admissions
P.S. Don't forget to visit the Campus Preview Weekend web site to begin making your travel plans!

Dear MIT Committee Members:
Thanks for your notification of March 15th. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your rejection at this time.
This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of schools, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.
Despite your outstanding record and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my current career needs.
Consequently, I will begin taking classes as a undergraduate student in your electrical engineering department.
I look forward to seeing you then.
If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at george.smith@mit.edu.
Sincerely, George

I actually scored over 9000 on both the SAT II and SAT I. It's hard to do, I know, but if you get your power level up, you'll do it. Anyway, this is how it went down: 9000 on every SAT II test = 9000*12? + 9000*3 parts on the SAT I > 9000. That makes me over 9000. Nobody can refuse over 9000.
(Seriously, though, go look at the statistics for last year's class and this year's class, and aim for the median score or above. My guess is that the essays/interview are equally if not more important than the scores anyway.)
Posted by: Will '12 on March 16, 2008
Do you mean collectively you scored over 9000 on all the SAT tests you took?? (A little puzzled)

I didn't realize that that was actually possible to do until you asked me if I really did, haha. I didn't take anywhere near that number of tests; I'm not that crazy
@Hopeful '13
Read my comment to Aamir. Then, disregard it, and SCORE OVER 9000.

You can search some of posts about the admissions process. I think Ben liked to one in his last post. Basically, you should have competitive scores (like 700 or above-ish), but killing yourself for an extra 100 points isn't going to get you in. Spend the time on something you love. Don't try and do what you think colleges are looking for. They want you, and what you love to do, so just follow that.

Hey there, so yeah, my SAT Is were far from perfect: 590 Wr, 690 CR, 780 Math. My SAT IIs were 800 Math 2 and 770 Physics. Scores dont really count for as much as people think. Personality, drive, and potential, thats where you can win big. Dont sweat the nitty gritty, dont try to shape yourself to MIT, let MIT shape itself to you, and if it fits, I'll see you next year.

BTW, to the person who asked about SAT scores, I was an i'tl applicant who got almost all 800's on my SAT II and was in the top 5% for my ACT. Lol, I'm still quite surprised I scored higher than 99% of Americans in the English section even though I come from a non-English speaking country.
But as you can see, test scores aren't everything. I think I also scored well on the passion scale and essays and recommendations. Two major points where I think I screwed up:
1. Overplanning and not looking like I'm being myself
2. Annoyed at least two MIT bloggers (possibly including Ben)
Posted by: Muz on March 17, 2008
Posted by: Chelsea on March 17, 2008

Firstly, I understand how disappointed you must feel. I also assume that your bow to "our superiority" is an example of (good-humored) sarcasm, because you then provide an overview of your stats and other accomplishments which obviously indicate that you were a highly qualified candidate in the first place. You need not take a bow.
The point is about your thinking that you did not gain acceptance for annoying a couple of MIT bloggers, including, possibly, Ben. Now, this is something difficult to believe, and this is certainly not the correct manner of critical self-introspection. If you have read the blogs in the past, you should have known that your application has been discussed and reviewed by approximately 12 persons. Rest assured that no single Admissions staff member (or even an "annoyed couple") can use such an extraneous factor (such as your posts on these blogs) to keep you off the admit pile. Why they would at all want to do it is another matter. Their job is to choose the "best" class possible (in terms of fit, of course) from the applications and credentials that come in the applicants' folders. Their job, certainly, is not to factor in how you behave on these blogs in the eventual admission decisions.
I really hope even now you are "not looking like you are being yourself", and that this is just an off-the-cuff remark made without thinking. My only advice: please remember the essay prompt A, take this "as an experience which, at the time, really felt like “the end of the world” — but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today". You are welcome to discuss value in the negative, but to think of yourself as "inferior" or to psychoanalyse MIT bloggers is hardly the best way to do it. Please remember that, at the end of the day, we will all change the world together.

I really wasn't being sarcastic with the bow thing. It's just a way of acknowledging that I have been honorably defeated. I'm like that
Posted by: Muz on March 17, 2008
Please do not take it as an honorable defeat. It is really not a war, and if you still insist that it is, nobody wins. I realize how incredibly lucky I am to be admitted. While I am delighted at this, I am also sad at the disappointment and heartbreaks that I see all around. Believe me, I am really not lying.
If you think of it as a war, you discount the fact that you and I can actually be in the same grad school eventually, or working in the same lab, or writing the same book together, or, simply, be friends.
Muz, my friend, please cheer up.
Apologies again.

It may not exactly be a war, but it is a competition nonetheless. There will be winners and there are those who would have won under different circumstances. I do hope to meet you all one day. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll be accepted at Harvard, where my chances are doubled (which still isn't very high

to the international student above, wow, you are so amazing, even though you didn't get in, you are going to succeed in life and will accomplish many great things. Perhaps it was your GPA,or your essays. But still, you sound like a really cool person, and don't let this rejection make u feel less.

You must have over 9000 in every grade to get into MIT.
[Seriously, though, I highly doubt that they're going to care about a 99 versus a 101. There's a whole section on the website somewhere devoted to what they're looking for in a potential student.]
@Dot
Being from Florida, let me go ahead and tell you: CPW >>> Disney World.
Posted by: Will '12 on March 18, 2008
Frankly, I have no idea, and I doubt if the others posting their comments here will, too, because (1) we are not admission officers and (2) this is simply not enough information to even hazard a wild guess. The only thing I can say is that the reason cannot be "Couldn't afford it", because MIT's admission considerations are need-blind for domestics and internationals alike.
Try posting on College Confidential, which is more suited for this discussion.
