Posted by: Rejected on March 15, 2008 OMG OMG OMG No I can't stop saying it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: Oh. My. God. on March 15, 2008 @Rejected Here's the message: On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2012. You stood out as one of the most talented and promising students in one of the most competitive applicant pools in the history of the Institute. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals has convinced us that you will both contribute to our diverse community and thrive within our academic environment. We think that you and MIT are a great match. You’ll likely have offers of admission from many fine schools, but we hope that you’ll choose to enroll at MIT. You have until May 1, 2008 to let us know if you’ll call MIT home for the next four years – please visit your MyMIT account to complete our official Reply Form. Until then, we look forward to building our relationship with you and to helping you to get to know us better. In the coming weeks, we’ll be in touch via phone, email, and web. Many of our students believe that the campus visit experience was the deciding factor in their choice to enroll at MIT. Therefore, we hope you will be our guest at Campus Preview Weekend (CPW), held on the MIT campus from Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13. CPW is an excellent way to experience MIT student life firsthand. You’ll go to classes, eat lots of food, join hallway conversations, and meet your future classmates. We encourage your parents to attend as well; please see the enclosed CPW invitation for details. If you can’t come to CPW, please try to visit campus before May 1. To make arrangements to stay overnight with an undergraduate host, simply complete the online request form in your MyMIT account. If you are unable to visit campus but eager to get to know MIT, you’ll have the chance to speak with a current undergraduate soon; an MIT student will be calling you in April. And now for the requisite fine print – I must remind you that this offer of admission is contingent upon your completing the school year with flying colors. Have fun with the rest of your senior year, but please keep your grades up! I hope you’ll agree with us that MIT is the perfect place to prepare for your future. As a member of our community, you’ll join builders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and humanitarians. Together, you will make all the difference in a world that desperately needs you. Many congratulations, and once again, welcome to MIT! (Now stop reading this and go celebrate. Sincerely, Stuart Schmill Interim Director of Admissions P.S. Dear MIT Committee Members: Thanks for your notification of March 15th. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your rejection at this time. This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of schools, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals. Despite your outstanding record and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my current career needs. Consequently, I will begin taking classes as a undergraduate student in your electrical engineering department. I look forward to seeing you then. If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Sincerely, George Posted by: george on March 15, 2008 Well this is a good time. Cheers! And yup, consider joining the western Orkut: Facebook. :D Aur Indian-subcontinent se kiska kiska hua? Posted by: Viksit'11(India) on March 15, 2008 Best wishes to all the accepted. My daughter was defered and now she didn't get in. We kind of prepared as a family for any news. We do know that if you are from a certain background from where, the most smart and predominant pool of applicants apply, it would be virtually impossible to get in if one can't match with them closely. Although colleges say there is no quota system, one wouldn't want to see 1500 people from the same back ground. Thanks MIT for keeping this process exciting. Posted by: A parent on March 15, 2008 congrats everyone!! i can't wait till cpw! =) Posted by: carmen'12 on March 15, 2008 So I was thinking - something I regained the ability to do after a few hours - and I realized that, as perfectly glorious and wonderful as this day is (and really, the weather's lovely in FL), how perfect would it have been if the letters came out yesterday (pi day)? I feel weird saying "I" like I did it alone. So I'll thank most, if not all of the people that helped me along the way. I thoroughly and sincerely thank my parents, my teachers (especially the recommendation writers!!!), my interviewer, and last but certainly not least, the MIT admissions staff. This is such a wonderful feeling!!! Thanks!!! Anyway I'd like to give a BIG shout out to MITES '07. Without that program and the resulting experience that I gained as a quasi-MIT student, I would have nearly nothing to talk about in my essays. Speaking of MITES '07, thanks Dr. C for all of your help. Congrats to everyone else who got in, and good luck and best wishes to those who didn't. With that said... GO MIT CLASS OF 2012!!!!! Guess it wasn't meant to be. Anyways, out of curiosity would any of you mind posting some of your stats and background? I'm curious to see what types of students MIT picked and what made you all so much better than me and some of the amazing others whose stories I've read on the rejected page. Posted by: Josh Leonard-Goodwill on March 16, 2008 I think the best part of the acceptance is the reaction it gets from family--my grandma and my mom cried, and my grandpa didn't even know what MIT was heehee. I found out while getting a hair cut. My mom was getting her hair shampooed when I told her so she kind of squirmed like an elated turtle for a couple minutes with the back of her head in the sink. I believe I should end this with an emphatic W00T! Posted by: Alec on March 16, 2008 @Becca: I'm from CO (N. Colo to be specific). Whereabouts are you? MIT or Caltech.... definitely Caltech. California here i come Posted by: Adabi on March 16, 2008 Guys, I am a hopeful 2013 and i congratulate you on your great achievement and i would like to know if all of you scored 2400 or 1600 in SAT 2 and also in SAT 1. So that i too can work towards the right score till i have time. It would be very nice if you could give me some tips on the application essay. My email id is email@example.com I thank you for your help and gesture. And congratulations again Posted by: Hopeful '13 on March 16, 2008 ^^^ MIT requires a 2600. This means you must do so well that you get extra credit lol...jk sry i had to. In actuality, MIT doesnt care once you paass a certain threshold...I'd say somewhere around 2100 to be safe. Congrats again everyone!!! See you at CPW. Posted by: OmarA on March 16, 2008 So are there any Ohio acceptances? Posted by: 0 on March 16, 2008 I don't think scores that high are entirely necessary. There are better things to work on than an extra 100 points overall on the SAT. Posted by: Anonymous on March 16, 2008 @Hopeful '13 I actually scored over 9000 on both the SAT II and SAT I. It's hard to do, I know, but if you get your power level up, you'll do it. Anyway, this is how it went down: 9000 on every SAT II test = 9000*12? + 9000*3 parts on the SAT I > 9000. That makes me over 9000. Nobody can refuse over 9000. (Seriously, though, go look at the statistics for last year's class and this year's class, and aim for the median score or above. My guess is that the essays/interview are equally if not more important than the scores anyway.) Posted by: Will '12 on March 16, 2008 @Will'12 Do you mean collectively you scored over 9000 on all the SAT tests you took?? (A little puzzled) Posted by: Aamir on March 16, 2008 lol aamir he was being sarcastic Posted by: lol on March 16, 2008 @ '13 hopeful : SATs are really not everything. I'm am/was an international applicant(oh crap I'm not an applicant anymore now am I ? w00t!). I didn't do all that well on the SATs. I still made it. I guess that just goes to show that MIT really cares about whether you're really passionate about whatever it is you want/do (physics in my case) So all the best Lets hope we'll see you there next year Posted by: Aditi on March 16, 2008 @Aamir I didn't realize that that was actually possible to do until you asked me if I really did, haha. I didn't take anywhere near that number of tests; I'm not that crazy Rest assured, though, that the score in my heart is well over 9000. My brain just doesn't always match. (PS: The Over 9000 thing is an Internet meme--Google it!) @Hopeful '13 Read my comment to Aamir. Then, disregard it, and SCORE OVER 9000. Posted by: 0 on March 16, 2008 ^^ that was me. Posted by: Will '12 on March 16, 2008 any other Austin, Tx people? Posted by: Marty'12 on March 16, 2008 It's just when add up 800's from all tests you can go over 9000 so I was wondering... and believe me there are those people out there who would try or even do them all!!! Posted by: Aamir on March 16, 2008 :-D hard to believe that after getting deferred I got in but it feels so wonderful! see you all at CPW! Posted by: Steve on March 16, 2008 I love the PetSmart story, as well. Mine was similar in the getting my decision at work and running around telling everyone who was happy because it was such a big deal to me but had no real clue what MIT was...I was supposed to be allowed to use my boss's laptop at her first break but she forgot it (how when I'd bugged her about it daily for a week, I've no idea) and I had to get special permission to use the main reception area computer, while the receptionist was using it, so we kept minimizing each other's windows while she was on the phone with a customer...and I'll conclude this sentance here before my Freshman year English teacher disowns me. Eek. Posted by: Lainers on March 16, 2008 Congratulations, everyone! I'm EA, so I've been waiting for all the crazycool Admitted perks to kick in, and now that everyone's accepted I feel like the rest of the crew FINALLY made it to the party. CPW will be wondrous - hold on to your hats. Posted by: Shamarah on March 16, 2008 @Marty: I'm an Austin, TX acceptee =) Do I have you on FB yet? (linked my profile) Posted by: Vivi on March 16, 2008 Yes. I totally had nightmares the night [or rather week] before. Then I was in such shock that I checked back at least fifty times. I truly didn't believe it until I realized after the 50th time that the message was still the same. I keep randomly grinning. And I burst out laughing from sheer joy! Posted by: Roshan '12 [previously Ecstasy '12, lol] on March 16, 2008 @Vivi: i don't have a facebook....yet Posted by: Marty'12 on March 16, 2008 So, I am really surprised I made it in. Turned in the wrong essay accidentally, and still was admitted. Wow. Posted by: ruthless813 on March 16, 2008 marty, i'm austin texas too. well pflugerville. but close enough.. Posted by: kayla '12 on March 16, 2008 @Tim-baugh: I live near Boulder. You can search some of posts about the admissions process. I think Ben liked to one in his last post. Basically, you should have competitive scores (like 700 or above-ish), but killing yourself for an extra 100 points isn't going to get you in. Spend the time on something you love. Don't try and do what you think colleges are looking for. They want you, and what you love to do, so just follow that. Posted by: Becca on March 16, 2008 Hey Afrah Shafquat although i am a pakistani i didnt get accepted ....... i hear that only three pakistani's got in this year .... thats INSANE. anyways congrats and dont forget to make our country proud Posted by: Chughtai on March 16, 2008 yay us. do they not send out tubes anymore? cpw is the same weekend as senior prom :( Posted by: TLan on March 16, 2008 They just send tubes for EA unfortunately. We'll just have to make our own. =P CPW is the same weekend I have a rowing regatta, so I don't think I'll be there. Posted by: Becca on March 16, 2008 @ Hopeful '13 Hey there, so yeah, my SAT Is were far from perfect: 590 Wr, 690 CR, 780 Math. My SAT IIs were 800 Math 2 and 770 Physics. Scores dont really count for as much as people think. Personality, drive, and potential, thats where you can win big. Dont sweat the nitty gritty, dont try to shape yourself to MIT, let MIT shape itself to you, and if it fits, I'll see you next year. Posted by: Robert '12 on March 16, 2008 @Tulio SO i realize this is a little late, and there are a billion posts in between but I'm swimming too =) Posted by: Jennifer on March 16, 2008 @TLan my senior prom is on CPW weekend too. :( IDK maybe i can come on thursday and leave Friday night. Posted by: Hopeful'13 on March 16, 2008 Cam, MIT will arrange a host for us, so lodging is free, as is food, which will be provided either at the dining halls, or at events. Transportation to CPW is not paid for by MIT. Hope this helps! Hooray! Congratulations to everyone who got accepted! Thanks so much to all of the admissions staff. Wow, now I've got to choose between MIT and Caltech. Crud. Oh well *overwhelming happiness puts thought of impending difficult decision out of mind* Wahoo! Posted by: Moose on March 17, 2008 Haha, I did have nightmare the night before about being rejected... glad it didn't become real Thank you, you all, MIT admission officers!!! Posted by: Cat on March 17, 2008 I am just an alum browsing through the site. Congratulations to all of you. I remember bouncing off the walls when I heard I'm in (scarily some 11 years ago). It's an opportunity to learn a lot and to make life-long friends. I made friends from Japan to California and Russia to South Africa. Enjoy and rejoice. Rami Palestine Posted by: Rami on March 17, 2008 this will be the first time that i'm actually posting my real name on this site... But i thought this moment was momentous(ha!)enough to do so. Neways, I'd like to thank the entire MIT admissions staff for considering me as they did and admitting me, even though I really thought I had no chance of actually getting in. I am ecstatic and in a state of perpetual reverie and euphia (if that makes sense). Now I'll be in a school full of pretty talented kids and it is going to be more difficult to continue to get the grades that I get now and that I'll have to devote much more of myself to my studies. @Cynthia: I'm fully Haitian but think I'll become a citizen in time to vote... By the way a wonder who guys think should be the next president Posted by: Everson on March 17, 2008 @Will'12: I'm making the Caltech/MIT decision too, but I'm definitely thinking MIT. I'm from the northeast(ish), and plus, I go to a school that has 665 kids in my graduating class. So, I'm into bigger schools. Plus, Boston rocks my (red) socks! I'm so bummed that my orchestra trip is during CPW! Oh well, Disney World is pretty cool too. Congrats everyone! Posted by: Dot on March 17, 2008 WOW! I got accpepted at MIT! I guess this is a little late to post, but congratulations to everyone who got in, this is a great honor. And don't worry waitlisters, there's always some people who don't end up attending-there's always a few Caltechers above. And Will '12, 9000? I thought my 8570 was good... Posted by: Josh on March 17, 2008 Congratulations everyone! I never thought I would be accepted, this has truly made my senior year amazing! Posted by: Katie on March 17, 2008 I didn't get accepted :( Well, good luck to all of you who did get accepted. I bow in honor to your superiority. BTW, to the person who asked about SAT scores, I was an i'tl applicant who got almost all 800's on my SAT II and was in the top 5% for my ACT. Lol, I'm still quite surprised I scored higher than 99% of Americans in the English section even though I come from a non-English speaking country. But as you can see, test scores aren't everything. I think I also scored well on the passion scale and essays and recommendations. Two major points where I think I screwed up: 1. Overplanning and not looking like I'm being myself 2. Annoyed at least two MIT bloggers (possibly including Ben) Posted by: Muz on March 17, 2008 Yeah about the SAT scores, I honestly can't remember what I got... all over 700s but I really can't remember...which kind of goes to show, I think that while test scores are important, what's more important is, as Muz said above, just being passionate and being yourself in your application. Most of the people here have great test scores, so my advice to you would be to show the admissions office that you're more than just some numbers. Posted by: Chelsea on March 17, 2008 fg Posted by: 0 on March 17, 2008 @Muz: I have been accepted to the Class of 2012 as an international student, and though I have posted in my own name above, this time I will chose Anonymity, because you have raised a sensitive issue and I would not like to appear to be holding anybody's brief in public. Firstly, I understand how disappointed you must feel. I also assume that your bow to "our superiority" is an example of (good-humored) sarcasm, because you then provide an overview of your stats and other accomplishments which obviously indicate that you were a highly qualified candidate in the first place. You need not take a bow. The point is about your thinking that you did not gain acceptance for annoying a couple of MIT bloggers, including, possibly, Ben. Now, this is something difficult to believe, and this is certainly not the correct manner of critical self-introspection. If you have read the blogs in the past, you should have known that your application has been discussed and reviewed by approximately 12 persons. Rest assured that no single Admissions staff member (or even an "annoyed couple") can use such an extraneous factor (such as your posts on these blogs) to keep you off the admit pile. Why they would at all want to do it is another matter. Their job is to choose the "best" class possible (in terms of fit, of course) from the applications and credentials that come in the applicants' folders. Their job, certainly, is not to factor in how you behave on these blogs in the eventual admission decisions. I really hope even now you are "not looking like you are being yourself", and that this is just an off-the-cuff remark made without thinking. My only advice: please remember the essay prompt A, take this "as an experience which, at the time, really felt like “the end of the world” — but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today". You are welcome to discuss value in the negative, but to think of yourself as "inferior" or to psychoanalyse MIT bloggers is hardly the best way to do it. Please remember that, at the end of the day, we will all change the world together. Posted by: 0 on March 17, 2008 congrats every1 on getting accepted into MIT. It would be my dream come true. But do you guys have any tips on my application process? although my overall is only 94 for now not counting second term of junior year and first term of senior ill most likely have a 101 overal for junior year. Around what average should you have to get in? I got 100 in math for the last 3 terms and 102.3 in physics. Posted by: Sam '13 on March 17, 2008 @Anonymous: Lol, you've just proved my point. I have a tendency to get people grated at me on the Internet for what was supposed to be an innocently joking remark. Now, I wonder how they saw my essay XD I really wasn't being sarcastic with the bow thing. It's just a way of acknowledging that I have been honorably defeated. I'm like that Posted by: Muz on March 17, 2008 @Muz: If that is so, I apologize sincerely and wholeheartedly. Let's understand each other and smile. *makes smiling gesture* Please do not take it as an honorable defeat. It is really not a war, and if you still insist that it is, nobody wins. I realize how incredibly lucky I am to be admitted. While I am delighted at this, I am also sad at the disappointment and heartbreaks that I see all around. Believe me, I am really not lying. If you think of it as a war, you discount the fact that you and I can actually be in the same grad school eventually, or working in the same lab, or writing the same book together, or, simply, be friends. Muz, my friend, please cheer up. Apologies again. Posted by: 0 on March 17, 2008 Whopping Wafers!! This is amazing! Congrats to everyone who got in -- 4 years of hard work and all-nighters might have paid off! Posted by: Georgia on March 18, 2008 Omar '12 - yeah UAE is a great place! I've been around the UAE but not to the other gulf countries..Where r u from? Natasha4 - guess dt makes two of Indians frm sumwhere around here! Both of you - Are any of y'll planning to attend CPW? Posted by: 0 on March 18, 2008 sorry dT above was me. btw Omar- du just live in Amman or r u Jordanian? Posted by: kavya on March 18, 2008 @Anonymous: No prob, no offense taken. That's the reason why I toss so many smileys in my text these days. People always seem to be offended with what I say without them, taking the sarcastic for serious and vice versa It may not exactly be a war, but it is a competition nonetheless. There will be winners and there are those who would have won under different circumstances. I do hope to meet you all one day. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll be accepted at Harvard, where my chances are doubled (which still isn't very high ) Posted by: Muz on March 18, 2008 @ '13 hopeful : leave a comment on my blog so I can find you and w00t 358 =P Posted by: Aditi on March 18, 2008 aloha from hawaii and congrats to all! anyone else from hawaii? Posted by: 0 on March 18, 2008 Congrats to you all! This is Kelly of 2011. I'm from Taiwan, and wonder if there's anyone admitted from Taiwan this year? Feel free to write Posted by: Kelly on March 18, 2008 Hey those who got in, Can you read this and comment thnx, and congrats GPA 3.9 (Bad English and History Grades) AP Cources taken during High School 5 (Calc, Physics, Chem, Bio, Lang) College Course 2 Math Competitions won during High School: around 20 Science Competitions won: 2 Clubs: 15 NHS, Math NHS, Spanish NHS Speak 4 languages everyday Lived in two differnt countries (4 years in USA) ACT 29 (Bad English Scores; 23, 26, 10 for Essay) MATH Level 2: 780 Physics 720 APPLIED AS AN INTERNATIONAL (Denied to have rights to apply Early Decision) Acceptance rate 4.33 (07-08) Family Income ($35000) Created a Model of a Bridge Varsity Football Player 2 yrs (Interleague other sports player) REJECTED! WHY??? Couldn't afford it? Didn't know English? I would have been happy to get accepted even though I might have not opted to go there. Please comment and let me know what could I have done, as obviously I paid no attention to my GPA in High School and had fun learning Math $ Science with a passion. (12 Semester of Science, 10 Semester of Math) WOW! Posted by: 0 on March 18, 2008 WOW! Congrats to everyone who got in. Three days have passed since I learned I got in, but I still feel I'm in a bubble. I really can't believe it. I feel so blessed and humbled. THANK YOU MIT!!!! to the international student above, wow, you are so amazing, even though you didn't get in, you are going to succeed in life and will accomplish many great things. Perhaps it was your GPA,or your essays. But still, you sound like a really cool person, and don't let this rejection make u feel less. Posted by: Nancy on March 18, 2008 deferred then accepted, this is so amazing, can't wait for CPW! congrats to all, thanks MIT =] Posted by: Karen on March 18, 2008 @Sam '13 You must have over 9000 in every grade to get into MIT. [Seriously, though, I highly doubt that they're going to care about a 99 versus a 101. There's a whole section on the website somewhere devoted to what they're looking for in a potential student.] @Dot Being from Florida, let me go ahead and tell you: CPW >>> Disney World. Posted by: Will '12 on March 18, 2008 @Anonymous with stats: Frankly, I have no idea, and I doubt if the others posting their comments here will, too, because (1) we are not admission officers and (2) this is simply not enough information to even hazard a wild guess. The only thing I can say is that the reason cannot be "Couldn't afford it", because MIT's admission considerations are need-blind for domestics and internationals alike. Try posting on College Confidential, which is more suited for this discussion. Posted by: 0 on March 18, 2008 @Katie: I was deferred and then accepted also. Posted by: Becca on March 18, 2008 @ Mark I'm going AFROTC. Posted by: Rachel on March 18, 2008 Nancy, I am going to UW Madison, which is still a top five for chem engineering, and I'll get 4.0 and w/e else you are suppose to get in MIT. It wasn't my dream to come to MIT but I felt like it was the best place for me to go to utilize my potential and academica skills. I guess, I wasn't good enough to get accepted even though the acceptance rate for me was around 3%. Posted by: Anonymous With Stats on March 19, 2008 does anyone know if the admission decisions for stanford are out yet? Posted by: 0 on March 19, 2008 hey has anyone gotten the acceptance envelope in the mail yet? because i live in Massachusetts and still haven't gotten mine.....getting nervous lol Posted by: A.B. on March 19, 2008 Comments have been closed.
