Financial Aid

It is not too late to begin applying for aid!

Posted in: Afford

The deadline to submit your financial aid application was February 15th. So, what should you do if you missed this deadline?

It is not too late to begin applying for aid! We read financial aid applications in the order they are complete, continuing to review freshmen applications well past the recommended submission date of February 15th. So the earlier you get your application in to us, the more likely you will have your financial aid award with your admissions packet or by the time you need to make an enrollment decision (May 1). So if you don’t have your application completed, please don’t panic. What you should do is follow up over the next few weeks, submit your materials, and check the Financial Aid Tracking system in MyMIT.

Speaking of the tracking system, it is now live on MyMIT! Just log in to check whether or not we have received your financial aid application materials. There are also handy links to the financial aid document sites. Keep in mind that it takes about a week for MIT to receive your FAFSA or CSS PROFILE after you complete it online.

We do understand some applicants may not have their 2010 Income Tax Returns or wage statements completed by now. If this is your family’s situation, simply submit your prior year income tax returns/wage statements, W-2 forms, and all schedules directly to us:

Student Financial Services
MIT Room 11-320
77 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-253-9859 (fax)
finaid@mit.edu

All prospective International students can send their Parents' 2010 Income Tax Returns or most recent wage statement (translated into English) directly to Student Financial Services.

U.S./Canadian citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents will still be required to submit the 2010 Tax Returns to IDOC when they are available.

If you have further questions please contact the Financial Aid Office.

I am an international student and I submitted the CSS Profile 9 days ago. About three weeks ago I sent the 2009 Income tax returns directly to the adress showed above and on MyMIT account it still states that you have not recieved any of these documents.
I do not know now if I should send it again or wait.
Thanks for your answer.

OK, what if my parent owns a business that isn't required to pay taxes and doesn't have tax return. Are self-employed parents supposed to submit tax returns to MIT?

Posted by: Omar on February 16, 2011

What happened to the financial aid calculator/will it be back online any time soon?

Posted by: Anonymous on February 16, 2011

Which part of MyMIT account is that? I don't see anything regarding the financial aid???

I sent the scanned documents, I sould mention.

Posted by: Observer on February 17, 2011

Hey Observer.. You don't have any separate option for knowing about your finAid...

It Just shows up all of a sudden below your check list or Application Tracking box in you MyMit Page....

Posted by: RaGHuL on February 17, 2011

Observer looks at everything and sees nothing.

I sent those documents about two weeks ago via email. and shortly received a response telling me that they are in receipt of your documents.

Should I contact them about this?

Posted by: Observer on February 17, 2011

@Observer --- Go and log into your MIT account, try seeing right below as soon as your page opens after log-in, there's fin-aid tracking available. If not, you may wanna wait a bit and try asking the MIT Fin-Aid office after awhile.

My account shows that I haven't submitted my CSS profile, although they are sent in the first week of February. What is wrong with me?

Posted by: Thura on February 17, 2011

When do you start to process the CSS profile? Should I wait or resend it? I am sure that I order College Board to send it to you more than 10 days ago. I am shocked when I know from my account that you haven't received it. What should I do?

Posted by: TTS on February 17, 2011

@Anonymous and @Observer - Give us another week to key in your documents. If you don’t see them then, give us a call at 617-253-4971.

@Anonymous - about the aid calculator: We’re working on a new calculator. It will be up in a few months.

@Omar - Yes, self-employed parents must submit their tax returns to MIT.

But my parents are not required to pay taxes. And they don't have any official income recordings, according to my country's system. I e-mailed SFS about my special case, and they literally said "a Business/Farm Supplement would be enough for verification of my income". I'm very mixed up at this now. What should I send?

Posted by: 0 on February 17, 2011

If you contacted us and were given specific instructions by SFS please follow those instructions. If you have further questions please don't hesitate to contact us again (http://web.mit.edu/sfs/contact/index.html).

Here has a format that is very alternative content of applying for aid . I like this article for this importance. I like to review my link of How to Have a Happy Family for all.

Hello! Thanks for the article, but I noticed a mistake (it is a mistake, right?) in the information on my.mit.edu:

U.S./Canadian citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents should file their 2009 tax through IDOC. If your 2009 income tax documents are not yet complete, send 2008 returns to Student Financial Services.
International students must send their parents' 2009 income tax returns or most recent wage statement (translated into English) directly to Student Financial Services.

Looks like the years are from the 2009 application.

Second, I sent my CSS profile like on February, 1st and it is still listed like "[not received]". I guess that you just need a bit more time for the processing, correct?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Posted by: Anonymous on February 18, 2011

anonymous do not worry. It is the same with me and my CSS PROFILE. I guess thy just need more than a week to process it.

Posted by: 0 on February 18, 2011

I sent my CSS profile sometime in January yet my MIT page says 'not yet received'. On the other hand, my family's tax returns and other documents, which I sent in February have been received.
Hope the processing gets done soon......

Regarding the out of date message on my.mit.edu we are unable to replicate this out of date message through testing. If the poster is will to help us determine source of the problem, could you please contact us by filling out a comment through this page: http://mit.edu/sfs/contact/feedback.html. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

International CSS profiles are being worked on, however they take some time to load into our system. We anticipate that most should be loaded no later then the end of next week. Thank you for your patience.

Posted by: FINAID on February 18, 2011

@FINAID - OK, I sent the feedback along with the screenshot and the steps to reproduce the problem. Thank you!

Posted by: Anonymous on February 18, 2011

I sent the CSS Profile on November 21st 2010. Is there any chance that this might have been mistaken for an Early Action CSS Profile?

Posted by: Nishan Srishankar on February 19, 2011

@FINAID - Thank you for fixing the out-of-date message!

Hi, when I look on my financial aid tracking it says I still need to send in my Resolution of NSLDS Match and Resolution of Conflicting Information. Where can I find these and how do I send them in?

Posted by: 0 on February 20, 2011

Similar query as Nishan above,
I sent my CSS Profile on 19th December 2010 but this requirement is shown as unsatisfied on my tracking account.
What should I do next?

Posted by: Saumya on February 20, 2011

Ok, this may be a really dumb question. But, if we are still waiting on RA decisions to come out (incoming freshman) do we need to start applying for financial aid already? Even though we don't know if we are accepted yet?

Posted by: Sarah on February 21, 2011

@sarah Yes you do need to apply now.The financial aid packet. The early you apply the more timely you will get it.
Also no question is dumb. It's just that you are not aware of it.The more you ask the more you get confident and explore yourself.Good Luck!!

Posted by: Bhaskar on February 22, 2011

@sarah Oops sorry I missed to write this in second line.It should be The financial aid award letter is included in the acceptance letter packet.

Posted by: Bhaskar on February 22, 2011

@Anonymous (about the MyMIT errors): Thank you for pointing it out and helping us!

@Nishan and @Saumya: Give us til the end of this week to get all of the international Profiles loaded. If you don’t see it as received then, give our office a call at 617-253-4971.

@Anonymous (about NSLDS Match and Conflicting Information): You should review the Student Aid Report that you received after submitting the FAFSA. There should be comments on it about the conflicting information. If you can’t find your Student Aid Report, give our office a call at 617-253-4971.

@Sarah: What Bhaskar said is correct, apply now for aid even if you don’t know if you’ve been accepted.
