^Someone from IIT: There's no need to brag. The admissions committee have chosen the ones who suit their mission best. I have a prospective 394AIR but still got rejected. Besides the admit rate for intls is ridiculuosly low.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014! Play with Science!

holy cow.
holy cow. wow. MIT.
now, while we celebrate, let's keep in mind that we do have a huge responsibility. Being the best of the best means we have the skill+power to help others, as well as the obligation. Let's use our knowledge to save the world. No task is too great.
Congratulations
Posted by: Alisha on March 14, 2010
MIT >> IIT
We all know that! The IITJEE is not enough basis to say that your school is tougher or better than MIT.
Of course, MIT is not just looking objectively with numbers, it's looking for students who has not passion to be the change in the world (not simply an A+ student). You know what I mean? Think before you speak.
To everybody who made it, congrats! To those who did not get in, remember you are not alone. Ten thousands are too. Being part of the admissions process of MIT is an honor itself. Only few people try that. Remember, there are more applicants at the other school down the road coz they are afraid of being rejected by MIT.
Congrats '14s!

Now, the biggest decision you get to make...
Do you choose MIT, or some other school that also accepted you?
I, myself, had a tough time picking between several schools.
* Purdue University: The only school that I ever got an acceptance letter from within a week of mailing in my application. It was an in-state school for me, a lot of my friends from high school were going there, and they offered me a scholarship such that I would be attending for free if I accepted. Plus, in the field of engineering, Purdue is considered to be one of the top 5 in the country. I had taken a summer course in calculus there in the summer before I started 10th grade, so I was already familiar with the campus and dorm life there. If I had gone, I was going to be roommates with my best friend from high school.
* Yale: Good reputation, nice rustic campus. I visited the dorms, library and various other trappings of New Haven. In the end, I felt it was more of a liberal arts school than an engineering school.
* Princeton: To quote my mother, "If I had a daughter, I would send her here." One of the most beautiful campuses I have ever visited. So many golf courses around campus. I never saw so many expensive foreign cars (whose values could pay for 4 years of tuition) parked along a single street before! Like Yale, I decided to pursue an engineering field, and I felt Princeton was more focused on liberal arts.
* Caltech: Ah, the big contender. Pros: They have the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, they are in California, and they also worship the beaver! Cons: It's in the middle of nowhere, and the boy:girl ration is like 6:1. I have a friend who went to Caltech, and he told me that if you so much as talk to a friend in a friendly way, all the other guys around give you the evil eye!
* MIT: Where I ultimately went, obviously. Why? I came from a small town in Indiana, where corn fields are plentiful and I could hear cows moo at night. So, for me, Boston really appealed to me. Plus, I liked the idea of having a larger student population than Caltech, the boy:girl ratio was more equal, and I loved the whole pass/no record and add-date/drop-date systems MIT has in place.
Being a second-semester sophomore now, I can say that I love MIT and am glad I chose it. But I will say, I find myself so hosed, between taking 6 classes and working 20 hours a week, that I average about 4 hours a night on most weekdays, and rarely get any sleep on nights before my 6.045 homework is due.
To those of you who got admitted, choose wisely. Any school you decide to attend will offer you many opportunities to learn and grow... any school you attend will swamp you with homework and hose you with exams.
In the end, I say... it is all about:
1.) The weather (MIT is currently getting hammered with rain, rain and more rain)
2.) The shopping (Boston, not so bad. Pasadena California, sucks)
3.) The education? 1+1=2 both here and in California.
4.) The social life (Boston greater area has the largest college student population in the nation)
5.) Means of travel (Buses, subways, taxis, and an airport all in easy reach. Boston also accommodates those who prefer to walk or ride a bike, with numerous bike paths and walkways)
6.) Cost (Okay, MIT loses here, as does Caltech and most Ivy League schools). At times, I wish I chose Purdue for it's inexpensive (aka, free) education. Oh well, a couple decades of debt-servitude builds character... *gulp*

I ve applied twice to MIT, didnt make it. The truth abt IIT is that it is mainly an exam between the top 25,000 students in India not 250,000. people here just sit for the exam, but ppl who apply 2 MIT need 2 think twice even before applying. In that respect MIT is much tougher to get into, especially for Intn'l students.
I do feel there needs 2 b more space for international students at MIT, pi-day just makes me feel the need to be born an American again. U guys must face the fact that Indians are smarter (no offence, even Obama said so
and yes I am from India, and I know well for a fact that MIT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IIT
That makes me wanna who all got in from India, plz post ur responses soon!

Well, I got rejected (yes i am really disappointed!) but I am really not complaining although everyone has always said I deserved to go to MIT, and my EC also said during the interview that I have reaal shot at MIT.
But when you look at the stats, you can not really blame the admission committee. Considering internationals, they have to drop 30 great applicants to pick 1, so do you really think we can complain if we are not that 1?
At the end of the day, it is down to luck, more than anything else!
I am sure you are great and so is everyone who applied to MIT. We can all prove our worth somewhere else, i am confident.

i bet they hav the best knowledge in their Phy Chem MAths than any other kids of ny other nation..
Indian kids have a bad luck...
after the most amount of hard work.. the college life isn so worth it...
things ll soon change.. they probably ll hav to..

I got a 690 on my math, and I think a 2120 on my combined score for SATS. I have a 98.5 GPA. I play one varsity sport and I am Class Vice President. Looks like you've got me beat in just about every category.
Except I think admission decisions are about more than just the numbers. They want to find students that can bring more than just the perfect SAT scores or GPA. Someone that will make MIT the special place that it is.
I'm not saying that I can or will bring something special to MIT, or that you wouldn't if you went there. But when there are thousands of applicants, I believe that admissions does the best job that it can in finding out what's behind the impressive resume, discovering those applications with a sort of sincerity . It could very well be some minute detail that makes an admission officer choose one applicant over another.
You already know that you are a very qualified applicant, just as many of those that were both accepted and rejected. But if you are looking for closure here is my best advice: You can't change the result. Questioning "why not me??!" won't get you anywhere. Accept it and look forward to what else life has in store. Is that too cliche...?
I don't know if this has helped you or anyone else or has just enraged you more but my intentions were to help! I wish you the best of luck.

I want to go for either nuclear or aeronautical engineering and MIT was one of the only colleges nearby (i didn't want to go too far from home). The only other two are RPI (which i was accepted into) and Penn State (which i didnt apply to but has rolling admission), but neither of these schools is of the same caliber as MIT. I also was accepted into WPI but they dont have nuclear eng. Any advice? COuld i spend a year at one of these schools then attempt to transfer? If I chose to stay for the full four years at one of these other schools which one would be the best? HELP ME!!

I can totally see where you are coming from and honestly my heart goes out to you. It's almost unbelievable that you weren't accepted! I think you have a right to be bummed :/
As for your current situation, I don't have a clue about what you should do! Heck, I still don't even know what I'm doing yet. I think it depends on how badly you want to attend MIT. If it's worth a lot to you, try to transfer! I expect that you will do as well in college as you did in high school and that will help you have a reasonable shot at getting in.
Ultimately, your college experience will be what you make it. Those schools may not have the prestige associated with them that MIT does, but they are still great schools that will provide you with a great eduction. You may end up attending a school that you love and never want to leave! You never know. Talk it over with your parents, a teacher, a guidance counselor, maybe your EC? They'll help you find your answer.

I've read your story, I believe I understand your frustration and disappointment. We will have plenty of them in the future. Please note MIT is NOT the only engineering school in this area, there are plenty of very good schools in New England. Schools listed in your previous emails are very good schools. If you are indeed the super-achiever you claimed to be then you will certainly be challenged wherever you go (NOT just in MIT).
Keep an open mind, and don't just lock on ONE major and one school. The college journey is another learning experience beyond just numbers/achievements in high school. So I suggest you let go the rejection burden and move on...

Being rejected is a difficult thing to endure, and I understand that it is often easy to get sucked up into the SAT/GPA rage when in the midst of the ycollege process. In my experience, however, the MIT admissions office does not pick students based on either, and it seems more likely that the students who are accepted happen to have high scores in both categories by coincidence. Moreover, discussion of such silly indicators of aptitude as standardized tests are considered obnoxious and unwelcome here. That you are asking people for their scores is just indication that you have little respect for the MIT admissions office, and little understanding of what MIT is.

5. North Carolina State University and University of California (Berkeley)
7. Penn State (University Park)
8. Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Florida

I understand your pain, but there is no reason to get so mad over it. Unlike you, I come from 3rd world country, broken family with a lot of issues and my only hope at better life was to get in good college. I've also ranked in top 5% of my school, had very good sat scores and TOEFL score. Yet, I got rejected and yes I am a bit disappointed but it's not worth of disrespecting MIT community and their decision committee. Try again next year (like I will), try early action in September or just pick another college. You have big advantage over people from countries like mine when it comes to college, so if you can't get into MIT right now there are plenty of others to choose from.

@kim thanks for the info, I've seen the lists and considered many of those schools. But like I said I kind of wanted to stay within a reasonable days drive of home. Most of my family(cousins, aunts, uncle, grandmother) lives in mass. so MIT seemed like a perfect choice. Now I'll probably choose RPI which is a very good school(7-8 hour drive home) although it didnt make the US News Report. Unfortunately I've visited thir MANE(mech, aero, nuclear, electrical eng.) facility and wasn't that impressed. And although I know that most of the learning experience is determined by the student, I believe MIT would have provided a better education. So I will move on and still control my own destiny. And thank-you again for the advice.
@Vuk Where are you from?

I look forward to meeting all you admitted students at CPW!
To those of you who weren't admitted, I hope to see you anyway. All of you seem incredible!

I sat at my computer for 15 minutes just staring... tried to play it cool to my mom and failed. Then proceeded to attack my sister in a big bear hug.
Called my closest friend, she screamed. And then started to slave away on musical light sets!
Thank you to the MIT Admissions for this opportunity! I'll be sure to make the best of it!
Congratulations to everyone who got in! I hope to see you at CPW!

@ JB. I really feel bad for you. Ultimately, MIT wants to build a class and not necessarily take the students with the best ECs and high GPAs. I see the GPA and SAT as a minimum requirement that shows whether you will succeed at MIT. With your SAT and GPA I think that you would have no problem succeeding academically (mine was in the same ballpark as yours).
Ultimately, I think that to get into MIT you need to be motivated by something that fascinates you -- something that blows your mind away. Something that you would be willing to spend hours on end working on until you get the final product. Something that will keep you busy at MIT in the midst of your intense amount of schoolwork. Of course, any veteran member of the MIT community could argue something else, and in that case, listen to him/her.
@ Kim '12. I noticed what you mentioned about the debt! For me, I have to choose between a full ride at a good state school and MIT. It really hurts to think about the staggering financial commitment for MIT even though it is such a good school. My parents told me we wouldn't get any fin aid (so I didn't apply) but spending 50k a year is definitely not easy. If I go to MIT, I feel bad that my parents will be tied to their jobs much longer until retirement. Did you have similar thoughts when you were in my position? Perhaps we can talk: email me at noravic123@gmail.com

You are not disadvantaged because you're advantaged; you're just disadvantages because a ****load of student apply, and admissions has to choose an entire class that works well together. No one, not even admissions, can tell you you're not "good enough" for MIT, but based on their experience, you and MIT as a match were not as fit as some of the other students.

I am referring to your reply to JB. How do you know only the admitted students have those qualities? JB could have the same qualities as well. I find similar comments time and again. Isn't it a miracle that only 1600 people with such qualities applied?

It's a natural recation to look for possible reasons for one's rejection from MIT....But have you considered the fact that it might not be because you have it easy. I mean, many people who get in also do. Remember that MIT is looking for people who inherently have that 'match' with the institute. For example, it is a research school so the adcoms will generally look for hands-on people who will maintain the research culture of the institute.
I'm not saying that you are not qualified. You obviously are. But too many people are blaming it on the fact that they've had an easy life. You are a great student. You're definitely going to get into another great college and enjoy it A LOT, probably better than you would have enjoyed MIT. Best of luck.

I think the admissions folks did a superb job identifying candidates - who fit the MIT "culture" - that fosters imagination, creativity and enterpreneurship.
We are extremely grateful and thankful to the admissions folks for identifying our precious little baby for admission...

For me, MIT was an easy decision... and yet, at the same time, quite difficult.
Academically, Purdue is a strong Engineering school. I know people from my hometown to went to Purdue for undergrad, and moved on to MIT for grad school.
Socially, my best friends from high school were going to Purdue, so it was really tough saying goodbye to my old buddies. y best friend and I had received our Purdue acceptance letters so quickly that we were already planning on becoming dorm roommates.
Oh yeah, Purdue is also famous for its Nude Olympics... and cars driving around campus with burning couches strapped on top.
But anyways...
Economically, MIT costs $40K a year in tuition alone... and growing. Then you get nickel and dimed with fees for things like "Student Activities" fees, textbooks (I bought a super-thin textbook for 18.404 written by the head of the MIT Math department for $150... sigh), a clicker (used in 8.02 for casting your daily quiz answer "votes"), and more.
MIT's financial aid program is a bit more stringent than federal financial aid, which has caused a few people I know some difficulties. I knew one girl who graduated 2 years early (by taking like 10 classes a semester) because she could not qualify for financial aid (though she really needed it), and worked about 40 hours a week to support herself.
Massachusetts, particularly the Boston area, is not a cheap place to live.
Purdue would have been a full-ride for me, tuition, room and board. And Indiana cost of living is substantially less.
That really made the choice difficult.
In the end, I chose MIT for 2 major reasons...
1.) Boston: I came from a small Indiana town, so I wanted to try a change of venue.
2.) MIT's reputation: Purdue is a great engineering school, and people in the engineering field generally know this. But, laymen probably don't. MIT, on the other hand, is more widely known as a top engineering school. As such, MIT generally gets more funding, access to research facilities and equipment, and employment opportunities for students. It is not that I could not find such chances at Purdue... just that it is easier to find such facilities and opportunities when you have the MIT logo plastered on the wall.
*sigh*

I'm thinking of applying next year, but I'm getting a bit worried coz I haven't yet had any major success at Olympiads or any ISEF affiliated fair and I haven't yet really accomplished any original research(though I'm really trying). My SAT scores might be high and my academic record is also neat (not outstanding). But I do think that I am passionate enough about to get admitted. So, shouldn't I give it a try? ( I'm an international poor enough to ask for full scholarship).

I'd very much encourage you to apply for Finaid, or at the very least sit down with your parents and see what the Financial Aid Calculator has to say. Last year 90% of our students received some form of financial aid, and 59% received aid directly from MIT.
