This year well over 18,000 students applied to MIT, the most in our history.

Because of the incredible size and strength of the applicant pool we were unable to offer admission to many, many incredible students whom we would love to have on campus. However, we did place some students on our waitlist.

We will have more information for waitlisted students in the coming weeks and months - about how our process works, what you need to do if you are still interested in MIT, and so forth. In the meantime, you may talk amongst yourselves below. As always, please keep your comments civil and friendly in our community.

MIT Admissions Decisions Now Available Online

MIT Regular Action admissions decisions are now available online here:

decisions.mit.edu

You can log in using the same username and password that you use to log into your MyMIT account. There are no interim screens, so you should be sure you are ready to receive your decision online before logging in.

As has become tradition, the MIT admissions decisions are being released on March 14 -- Pi Day. This year, decisions are being released at 9:26pm.

Admissions decisions are available exclusively online. We do not plan to send out any admissions decisions by mail, though admitted students will receive information on their financial aid package and Campus Preview Weekend in the mail next week.

This year, we received 17,909 applications for admission, a record number for us and an 8% increase over last year. We admitted 1715 students for an admit rate of 9.6%, or fewer than one of every ten applicants.

Because of the size and the strength of the applicant pool there were a great many incredible students whom we were simply unable to offer admission to. All applicants should know that the admissions staff gave them full consideration in our process. These decisions are not easy to make. But we also know that those students to whom we could not offer admission will find wonderful homes elsewhere and go on to do terrific things for the world.

We will have more news about the class to come. In the meantime, we have provided three "open threads" below where admitted, waitlisted, and not admitted students can talk amongst themselves. We ask only that the comments be kept friendly and civil in our community.

In a year of record early action applications, 590 students have been admitted to the MIT Class of 2014.

There were 5,684 Early Action applicants this year, representing a 13% increase over last year’s record. The deep applicant pool, combined with a commitment to maintaining equity between early and regular action admissions, meant that only 10.4% of applicants were admitted. An additional 3,893 applicants were deferred to regular action, where their applications will be reviewed anew.

Dean of Admissions Stuart Schmill said, “The continued quality and increased depth of the applicant pool – both in what students are doing inside and outside the classroom – is simply astounding. The selection committee had their work cut out for them.”

The 590 admitted students come from 44 states and 445 different high schools. First generation college students comprise 14% of the admitted group, and 27% are members of underrepresented minority groups. Women comprise 47% of the admitted students.

The record number of applications can be explained by MIT’s mission and values, said Dean Schmill. “MIT’s excellent financial aid program and commitment to serving students from all socioeconomic backgrounds were attractive to families in these economic times.” Schmill added, “In addition, students recognize the value of science & technology-centered education, combined with a strong humanities program, to acquire the tools to succeed in the global economy.”

MIT’s non-binding, non-restrictive early action program allows students maximum freedom and choice. “We want the process to be as helpful and accommodating to the students as possible,” said Dean Schmill.

MIT Regular Action admissions decisions are now available at https://decisions.mit.edu.

decisions.mit.edu

You can log in using the same username and password that you use to log into your MyMIT account. There are no interim screens, so you should be sure you are ready to receive your decision online before logging in to decisions.mit.edu.

Admissions decisions will be available exclusively online. To reiterate: don't wait for decisions to arrive via email or snail mail, as we do not plan to send out admissions decisions in this way this year. (Admitted students will receive information on their financial aid package and Campus Preview Weekend in the mail next week)

This year, we received 15,661 applications for admission, a record number for us and a 17% increase over last year. We admitted 1597 students for an admit rate of 10%, or about one of every ten applicants. We have offered a place on the waitlist to 454 students.

We on the admissions committee put our heart and soul, and our best judgment, into every decision, and most decisions are extremely difficult. Most students who applied to MIT this year were excellent matches for MIT, and most were extremely qualified. Our task is to choose from these many, many excellent applicants to bring together a class.

I know I speak for all of the admissions officers when I say that this has been a very difficult admissions process because of the large numbers of very, very qualified applicants. It made reading the applications a joy, but it made turning away students that much harder. Thank you for applying!

We'll have more to say about the process for the admitted students, waitlisted students, and the not admitted students in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime, we'll provide open threads today for all three groups.

MIT Early Action Admissions Decisions Available Online

MIT Early Action admissions decisions are now available at https://decisions.mit.edu.

This year, we received about 5,000 applications for early action admission, a record number for us and a 27% increase over last year. We admitted 540 students for an admit rate of 11%, or fewer than one of every nine applicants.

Students who were not admitted were either deferred or denied. Students who were deferred will automatically be reconsidered during regular action. Students who are denied admission will not be admitted for this year and may not reapply for regular action admission.

We on the admissions committee put our heart and soul, and our best judgment, into every decision, and most decisions are extremely difficult. Most students who applied to MIT in early action this year were excellent matches for MIT, and most were extremely qualified. Our task is to choose from these many, many excellent applicants to bring together a class.

We'll have more to say about the process for the admitted students, deferred students, and the denied students in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime, we'll provide open threads today for all three groups.

I know I speak for all of the admissions officers when I say that this has been a very difficult early action process because of the large numbers of very, very qualified applicants. It made reading the applications a joy, but it made turning away students that much harder. Thank you for applying!

Waitlist Wrap-Up 2008

This afternoon, we notified the 64 students remaining on the waitlist that we do not have any more room in the class, and will not admit any additional students from the waitlist this year. The decision not to admit any more from the waitlist was especially difficult, as there were many really great students on the waitlist who we wished we had room for. We appreciate your having been able to wait with us into the early summer.

This was an extraordinary year across the admissions landscape, with some of our peer institutions needing to admit greater than 200 students from their waitlists. Large waitlist movement at a few schools has ripple effects, requiring longer waitlists at many colleges this year. We're glad that things have now settled down enough that we can conclude our admissions for this year and let the remaining waitlist students focus on their schools for the fall.

To those of you who stuck with us on the waitlist, thank you, and we wish you all the best at your college in the fall -- we know you will have a terrific and successful experience.

Best wishes,

Waitlist Update

We are writing with a quick followup to Matt's recent entry. The Waitlist Committee has finalized decisions and is currently emailing all waitlisted applicants.

A brief overview:

Of the 629 students currently on the waitlist, the committee has chosen to admit 35, to keep 64 on the waitlist, and to not admit the remaining 530.

Unfortunately, the committee was not able to admit any international students from the waitlist. Because the yield for international students admitted in Regular Action was quite high, the international student quota was met prior to any waitlist activity.

Please check your email account for your individual waitlist decision (it should be there soon!). Thank you for your patience throughout this process.

Best wishes,
