Coursework
MIT offers more than 4,000 courses in 30+ academic departments, sections and programs.
A typical course load is four-to-five courses each term. Freshmen are subject to a credit limit of no more than five courses, as they get used to the pace and intensity of MIT. Upperclassmen are free to take as many courses as they like, with their advisor's approval. No matter how many courses you take, your tuition remains the same.
The faculty-to-student ratio is 6.4 to 1. Naturally class sizes vary, but some generalizations are possible: 64% of undergraduate classes have fewer than 20 students and only 3% have more than 100 students. Very few MIT subjects are "closed" by overenrollment or stringent requirements; most MIT students are able to enroll in every course that they want every term.
Students may also cross register (enroll in courses for MIT credit) at Harvard University, Wellesley College, the Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
MIT's entire course catalogue is available online for free at http://web.mit.edu/catalogue and at http://ocw.mit.edu. If you prefer, you can also buy a print edition from the MIT Press Bookstore.
