Residential Life / Housing Options
In the community of MIT, your housing group is your neighborhood and your family in one. It's a place to work, relax and socialize side by side with an incredible mix of smart, interesting, creative individuals from around the world.
As you navigate the challenges of MIT together, some will become your friends for life. You're sure to find people who will introduce you to cultures, ideas and cuisines you've never explored before. And you may finally find someone else who shares your precise intellectual passions. You and your classmates will inspire each other to new academic leaps - and the upperclassmen down the hall will step in to catch you should you start to fall.
MIT guarantees housing for all four college years. As a freshman, you are required to live on campus in one of MIT's 11 residence halls (see below for photos). After the first year, some students choose to move into an MIT-recognized fraternity, sorority or independent living group (known collectively as FSILGs). A small percentage opt to live in an off-campus apartment (less than 10%). Overall, 90% of undergraduates live in MIT housing.
