Is TOEFL required? Does MIT accept IELTS?

TOEFL is not required for any applicant—it’s simply one of our test options.

MIT does not substitute for the TOEFL (we do not accept IELTS). There is a minimum score of 90 on the IBT TOEFL.

International students (or domestic students who do not speak English natively) have two options for testing. We have no preference between these options; you should take the set of tests with which you feel the most comfortable:

Option 1

  1. SAT or the ACT
  2. In addition, two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).

Option 2

  1. TOEFL
  2. In addition,  two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). This option is recommended for students who do not speak English at home or in school, or who have been speaking English for fewer than five years.
