i have fridays off this semester by Veronica P. '27

here's what i did with my first one

Dear blog,

Sometimes things just work out beautifully, like making your schedule for the semester and noticing that, for the first time, you have absolutely zero reason to be on campus on Fridays.

A class schedule, with no classes on Fridays

And so when that Friday morning rolls around, you can confront it as slowly as you want to. You can wake up without a blaring alarm, note the snow out the window and decide to sleep for another hour. And when that hour is up, you can crawl out of bed at your own pace. You have the power to turn the afternoon into your morning, if you so choose (and you do, so choose).

And you can walk to Red Line and find that, without checking the schedule, you’ve arrived exactly one minute before your train. One of those coincidences that makes you feel like the universe is aligning itself perfectly to make your day, like you’ve hit a drive with only green lights.

And you trek to a new coffee shop, noting that even the below-freezing cold doesn’t feel so abrasive anymore. Your friend recommended it to you as the best cafe in boston. Lo and behold, it is in fact the best coffee you’ve had in Boston.

A latte

And you were planning on getting some work done, but the coffee shop has no seating. Instead, you walk to a nearby park, just outside of Chinatown. You sit and sip your latte slowly, no laptop out. You people watch a bit, and are relieved to confirm that middle schoolers are still middle schoolers, still throwing snowballs at each other and yelling an inordinate number of curse words.

So to thank the universe for such a lovely ‘morning,’ you drop your coins into the tip jar at the bakery, where you’ve just purchased a steamed pork bun.

And you walk back to the Red Line and find, once again, that your train is exactly one minute away. Just in case you needed another dose of serendipity.

And certainly now it’s time to go back to campus and get some work done, but you can’t even bring yourself to mind.
