when i was a kid i wanted to be an astronaut. i liked the idea of being one of the few chosen to be launched into space. in hindsight, i think i just liked the science and danger part of it, in which I can explode things in the name of science or fix something like my life depended on it. given how little time I lasted without living with my friends in sophomore year when east campus closed, i don’t think I could handle being so far from people for very long anyway. in the end, i never really grew out of my space phase, seeing that my research is building satellites in starlab, and i can still name 5 constellations on a clear night. but only on earth is the moon a child’s dream of cheese and the sun helios’s chariot. here there are myths and raccoons and dinosaur fossils i think i am fine with not chasing my childhood dream because as i grew up, i realized everything beautiful is down here on earth.
