MIT likes to be unique in many ways: majors are called courses, everything from classes to buildings are numbered, and maybe more unexpectedly, MIT has a very unique dorm set-up. Dorms are not filtered by class year, there are no special “honors” dorms, and no dorm is meant to be “nicer” or an “upgrade” to others.⁠01 Though, admittedly, some dorms are nicer due to having more recent renovations/opening dates.

The biggest distinguishing factor between MIT dorms is each’s tight-knit and well-defined community. Undergrads take part in multiple campus-wide dorm exploratory events⁠02 Campus Preview Weekend in April for accepted students, and Residence Exploration the week before classes start in the fall for freshmen. to understand each dorm’s culture and where they want to live.

In order to help with this decision process, dorms make/compile Interactive Introduction to the Institute (I3) videos for students to explore the dorms and their culture each year. These are posted under each dorm on MIT’s Housing and Residential Services website.
