MIT requires letters of recommendation from two teachers and a Secondary School Report (SSR) with a transcript from your school counselor/official. We also accept other optional recommender materials including a school profile and letter of recommendation from your counselor, and one supplemental letter of recommendation. Documents must be sent by your recommenders in order to fulfill requirements.
Recommenders can submit materials the following ways:
- Upload directly through the MIT-specific recommendation form (preferred)
Once you add recommenders in the “Recommendations” section of the application, they will receive a personalized link to an MIT-specific recommendation form in which they can upload their materials. - Use a third-party service such as Naviance, SCOIR, Parchment, Cialfo, or MaiaLearning
Recommenders should indicate on the MIT-specific recommendation form that they will send materials through a third-party service. - Email PDFs to MIT Admissions
If your counselor is unable to submit materials through the application portal or third-party service, they may email documents as PDFs to [email protected] with the applicant’s full name and MIT application reference ID number in the subject line of the email. - Mail or fax (least preferred)
Materials sent via mail or fax take longer to process. If you must mail materials, make sure to include the applicant’s full name and other identifying information in the document.- Mailing address:

Regardless of how your recommenders plan to submit materials, 1) you should add them as recommenders in your application and 2) recommenders should submit the MIT-specific recommendation form. This helps us match materials to your application. While our preference is for materials to be submitted via the recommendation form, applications will not be disadvantaged if materials are submitted via other accepted methods.
