Tunnel Adventures by Hamsika C. '13
We didn't get lost, in case you were wondering.
Aside from classrooms and auditoriums and dorms, MIT also plays host to an elaborate system of tunnels that wind under and in between the various buildings that make up the campus. There’s been a long history of tunnel hacking associated with MIT’s below-ground labyrinth, but so far, I’ve neither seen nor participated in said activities. Instead, I’ve mainly used the tunnels to either test my sense of direction or shy away from the chilly winds that have sporadically blustered their way through MIT.
On one such cold day, Swetha ’13, Carin ’13, Divya B. ’13, Jeanne ’13 (all of whom you might have heard about before), and I decided to spontaneously take a trip to Harvard Square. We used the tunnels to make our way to Kendall, the closest T-stop.
The following was born of that endeavor (video-editing credit goes to Carin ’13). Note that in real life, we are not quite so eccentric as we seem in this video :) Enjoy!

Aditya, there aren’t any pre-frosh yet. We won’t know until December. (Except the kids who took a gap year.)

Well you don’t at first. you just wander aimlessly, and then you slowly learn the land marks.

Prefrosh is really just our term for “Prospective freshman.” You don’t have to be admitted to be deemed a prefrosh.

The tunnels are a really nice place to take a midnight walk when you need to think but it’s too cold to be outside. (Of course, with this humidity, that may not be for a while >.Pirates of the Caribbean music! Epic!

honestly, the tunnel seems less exciting than what I’d expect. How can you girls call it an adventure if the passage is so bright with many lights on and people walking around like a normal study hall.
For me I’d rather dig in a dark and mysterious cave which is wet, smelly and full of lizards lingering around. it may seem gross to you girls but it’s fun to a boy like me. :D
Nevertheless, the MIT tunnel is really something new and worth exploring if I have a chance to. :D

When I stayed at MIT for a month over the summer, I had sooo much fun exploring the tunnels with my friends! We’d usually end up at one of the Athena clusters down there so we could work in a quite environment (unlike the ones in the student center…) or hanging outside the glass blowing lab. Have you ever watched the glassblowers? It is so cool… we watched them make a pumpkin once and the professor who was overseeing the work explained how it was done and why they were doing certain things to the glass. It was so cool… I hope I am accepted in MIT so I could try something like that
