I designed a marching band drill for MIT by Jenny B. '25, MEng '26
and I didn't even need experience
Marching Mapper is an application for designing marching band drills, and it came out just a few months ago. My raging school spirit inspired me to choreograph a piece for MIT.
The app is surprisingly easy to use, even though I’ve never been in a marching band (or any kind of band). The animation is smooth (if you don’t stress your computer’s resources), the UI makes sense, and the tutorial was easy to follow.
My drill involved:
- 15 Trumpets — Left row near the bottom
- 15 Oboes — Middle row near the bottom
- 15 Cymbals — Right row near the bottom
- 30 Marimbas — Made up the “M” in MIT
- 30 Timpanis — Made up the “I” in MIT
- 30 Synthesizers — Made up the “T” in MIT
- 100 Trombones — Seen at the left side of the field
I’m very proud of my drill, and I think it should be performed at every MIT sporting event. To anyone in MIT’s music department: If you’d like to write an accompanying piece, let me know!
