I keep rereading the acceptance; I just can't believe it!

Posted by: Michelle '12(!) on December 15, 2007

A bit of advice about the tube: you might have to hunt for it. It didn't fit in our mailbox, so the delivery person left it on our porch, to the side of the door. It was placed so that it was hidden behind the door when the door opened. We didn't notice it for several days.

Every year MIT holds a contest for the design of the poster that goes out in the tube. This year's poster was designed by Emma T. '11, who lives on Conner Four (Burton-Conner). Enjoy! Congratulations!

Posted by: MIT anon on December 15, 2007

YAY!!!!! As I said before, adcoms. Thank you for doing a very difficult job.. Even though I am now more apt to appreciate your work, I would be thankful either way.

anyway, I look forward to meeting all of you at CPW!!

and while I don't know if you'd read this, deffered people .. I'm sure alot of you will still get in and if not, you will still have great options. I know that is easy for me to say.. but it doesn't stop it from being true.

And to self-indulge for a moment, ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^

This is so awesome!! I want to thank everyone in my life who's helped me gotten this far including God, my family, friends, peers, teachers, counselors, etc. I love them all and could not be more excited to finally become part of MIT- my dream school! =)

Posted by: Angelica on December 15, 2007

I was the first one to post admittance, and haven't quite calmed down yet.

Here in California, we have the "cold" temperature of about 60 F, without a cloud in the sky, but I will still be sitting down to a bowl of New England Clam Chowder with my family to celebrate!

Next year I'm guessing that winters won't be quite so balmy for me... but I'll love it anyway!

Have a great day, everyone!

Posted by: Erika (2012!!) on December 15, 2007

I was so worried I wouldn't get in, I was expecting to be deferred and have to wait another 3 months to get my decision, but thank you MIT! Now I just feel bad for everyone who was rejected. :(

So I'm from Oklahoma, and we just had this awful ice storm (we've actually been declared in a state of emergency) and like half the city is out of power, and my internet has been freaky because of it, and I was paranoid I wasn't going to be able to find out...but I did so its okay now, even though I woke up about five this morning out of nerves....yes this was all one sentence

See ya'll soon and contrats to everyone!

any tips on how I should approach a friend who was also applying? She goes to my school and I won't have any idea if she got in unless I ask. Should I let her ask me first or should I because I really don't know how often MIT accepts two students from the same high school early.

THEY'RE NOT SIGNING THEIR SOULS AWAY. Souls are merely stored in building 66 until graduation, or so I've heard ^.^

As for the Tube, decisions were released on a Saturday last year and I too got mine on Monday.

Posted by: Hunter '11 on December 15, 2007

So excited! You know, except maybe the signing my name away part?

Posted by: Yingxia on December 15, 2007

Baruch ata, Adonai Eloheinu, melech ha olam, Shehechiyanu v kimanu v higiyanu laz man hazeh. Amen.

A jewish prayer meaning "Thank you G-d for allowing me to reach this day"-the first words out of my mouth after I clicked that button. I've wanted to go to MIT since I knew what MIT was, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here. I was convinced I was going to get deferred, even possibly rejected. And yet, here I am, sitting here in disbelief. Congrats to everyone who got in, and if you got deferred, its just a couple months away (who am I kidding, its forever from now). Good luck,
Greg

Posted by: Greg S. on December 15, 2007

You know what you guys get to do now?

CELEBRATE! Last March, the night I was accepted, my family and a few close friends went out for dinner. Nothing too expensive or fancy, but it remains one of my most cherished memories.

After tonight, though, it's back to studying hard for finals and second semester. No senioritis for MIT students! raspberry

Posted by: Paul on December 15, 2007

I have to go back and reread the first line every half hour. The best news I've ever gotten.

Posted by: Tevis on December 15, 2007

@ archimedes: they accepted two early from my school this year! (that includes myself). and I believe they did the same last year.

Posted by: 0 on December 15, 2007

I'm from LI.

I was a little surprised there were a lot of kids applying at my HS - like someone else said, I'm not sure if I should ask them.

I'm still so happy and surprised I got in it. I also found out I got into one of my safe schools, but that doesn't really matter now.

Posted by: David on December 15, 2007

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe I got accepted!!
I celebrated all day today!

Ok, right, so I have a question.
Are the "congradulations" intentional? Because... the keyboard... doesn't place the 'd' and 't' anywhere close together.
Or is it a misspelling? Please don't be the latter* *headdesk*

So you guys, my future classmates (!!!), where is everyone from??

Central Florida, here. :D

Posted by: Meghan on December 15, 2007

Hi Meghan
I am from Sugar Land, TX (Houston suburb). Not so far from you!! We'll get to see four seasons.

Hi Sam!
Do you remember me from MathPath 2003. Anyone else from MathPath 2003 here?

Posted by: Arathi on December 15, 2007

aloha everyone from Hawaii! just got home, wasn't sure about what time to check the decisions. i thought i went into the wrong site, figured i got deferred. but then i reread the other blog post, and went to the decisions website.

"it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2012."

OMG!!!!! i can't believe i got in!!!! never in a million years would i think this hawaii boy could get in! god bless you all! thank you admissions office for giving me this chance!

Posted by: Julian Yuen on December 15, 2007

Now that I have been accepted to MIT, I'm glad the admissions process is so picky about who they let come to MIT. That means everyone there is going to be an intelligent, hardworking, generally goodnatured person. I think the community of awesome people will be even better than the amazing faculty, facilities, classes, life, etc...
I can't wait to meet you all.

Posted by: john Boggs '12 on December 15, 2007

I am so very happy for all of you! I am a mom of an '09. The '09s didn't get an on line notice nor a tube. It was wait for the snail mail and the "big envelope". That represents how fast life changes and evolves. You are now challenged with doing the same. MIT will change your life. Make the change for a better world.

OMG, I can't actually believe it!! I had a swim meet today and couldn't check until 6:45 tonight. I was in the computer lab at my boarding school and the young international students that stay there on weekends were wondering what was so exciting. I think they understood.

AWSOME!

In the meanwhile, enjoy your senior year the best way you can and I hope we'll meet in autumn.

I'm on lightweight men
where are you from? I'm from Miami, FL, and it's a solid 80 degrees outside right now (but we're still erging).

I woke up this morning and found out that it is real! I'm getting a Tube!

Posted by: Tong on December 16, 2007

It would be interesting to find out how many of those admitted chose to write the optional essays in the application.

Posted by: archimedes on December 16, 2007

Congrats!!

How I envy you guys. Brag about your applications so us RA applicants know what we're up against wink

Haha, j/k (kinda). I'd be so happy if I could join the admitted pool in a few months. It looks like such a long road from here. And even if I don't get accepted into MIT one day, it looks like I have double the (very low) chances of getting accepted into another uni in Cambridge, so I could still meet you all some day. But I'd still prefer MIT, even if the other one was ranked higher raspberry

Posted by: Anonymus on December 16, 2007

@Khalil: Where from on Long Island? I'm from Huntington Station.

@Archimedes: Psh, optional essays? Who does those things =P

Posted by: Marc on December 16, 2007

@Archimedes

I wrote the optional something you've created essay about the motor my friend and I built at WTP this past summer. I explained our design then threw in a small anecdote about how I tried to power it with a 9V battery and some cheap wire at home and almost started a fire. (Wire overheated and started sparking)

In the other optional part I used that space for some bulleted clarifications to my app.

Posted by: Meghan on December 16, 2007

gratz to all of you for getting accepted. gl at MIT next year, make all us rejects proud.

I REALLY WANT MY TUBE!! Anyone agree?

Posted by: Meghan on December 16, 2007

@Meghan

I agree--I cannot wait for my tube! I went to meet the mailman yesterday and told him to be on the look out for the tube because I got in to MIT! : )

I CONCUR MEGHAN & NATALIE!

The tubes may potentially arrive in ~24 hours!!!

Posted by: Jing Jing on December 16, 2007

Meghan, you went to WTP? I went to MITES! Maybe I saw the back of your head or something at that college information night.

Do you have a Facebook? If so, I linked my name to my page, so go ahead and add me :D

Posted by: Shamarah on December 16, 2007

I didn't even apply. I'm 16, but I wanna go to Penn State... but I have thought about MIT... well anyways I just want to let everyone who's going to MIT know about my operating system that's about to be complete. It's called Verdis, I built it alone, based off the Linux 2.6 Kernel. Verdis is a sexy ass operating system, it should be available @ my website www.ronaldarichardson.com in 2 day! So by my second release of Verdis I will need a handful of MIT students running Verdis on there computer?

@ meghan, VERY NICE essay!!!! Sounds like a good topic. And yeah I'm thinking of having a little tube dance when it comes.

Posted by: archimedes on December 16, 2007

Grrrr, can't there be mail on Sundays? Actually, I love the Postal Service, they do a hard job not many others could. but......it'd be really nice if they got paid extra just to deliver tubes today. I must be patient!

Posted by: archimedes on December 16, 2007

Hey, you're from Miami too?
I'm repping the 305—Hialeah, that is.
Yes, and in today's forecast we have some scattered rainshowers possibly followed by a cold front for tomorrow. Don't worry, the windchill factor will help drop the temperature. Predicted temp? 75 degrees. lol
Also, CAN ANYONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THEY REFER TO THE MAIL AS "THE TUBE"?
THANKS.

Congratulations for you admitted people. But I have a question. What did you guys get on AMC12 and AIME?

I love how the application said "if you don't know what the AMC or AIME tests are, don't worry" or something to that effect. It's like they read my mind!

Posted by: archimedes on December 16, 2007

I just realized. I go to boarding school and listed my mailing address as being at school, so I might not get my tube until january.

@Josh: Hey, I've used that phrase before. "Oh my muffins!" Glad to see we think alike.

Like Twilight Bob and everyone else has said, hope the best for us RD applicants. And mondo kudos to the MIT Admissions office for doing this kind of stressful job year in and year out. I, personally, couldn't bear the heart-wrenching myself -- even for one year. Hope you guys like our applications too!

(I just wish we would get a tube too!)

Oh, and has anyone else noticef that UC's essay prompt is almost word for word copied from MIT's Essay B? Methinks that UC may have been "influenced," perhaps... (Probably because MIT is so awesome anyway.)

You guys are all so amazing. If I get in, I can't wait to meet all of you. Man, people with my interests? Nothing could beat that. Just remember, as was said in an old engineering Time-Life book that profiled MIT, you guys are the "among the nation's brightest young students, hand-picked to lead us into the future" ... or words to that effect. Congratulations!

Integral! Radical! µ, DV

I'm from Brevard as well -- Cocoa Beach, to be exact. You and I were both on campus this summer; I wish I had recognized you as the RHS girl!

Congratulations on being admitted. Let's represent the Space Coast!

Posted by: Kyla on December 17, 2007

Hey guys! Don't you think that it is ronic that an MIT graduate may be the reason some of us will be able to afford MIT. What I mean is this: This Tuesday Ben Bernanke (Ph.D 79') lowered the federal interest rate, which in turn lowered the student loan interest rates. And data analysis shows that he will most likely lower it again before any of us has to take out a loan. In other words "Our destinies have always been controled by MIT alumni and not just the ones in th admissions office."

Is anyone else here from Southern California?
Wow, this is unbelievable. Congrats to everyone! Now that I've nearly exhausted myself sharing the news, It's finally starting to feel real. Really amazing! I can't wait for CPW, you are all awesome... this is intense. Agh, I feel so honored posting here!! Good luck to you in RD, it will all come sooner than you expect.

Posted by: Micca on December 18, 2007

I'm from near the Los Angeles area, though I guess you were talking to your new '12 classmates.

Warning for Californians - and this one isn't about snow - the sun sets EARLY here in winter. And this tends to make a lot of Californians want to sleep a lot, myself included ^.^

Posted by: Hunter '11 on December 18, 2007

To Abismael Diaz,

Just so curious -
How do you guarantee that MIT will not regret it for accepting you, and how are you doing to change the world?

Posted by: JuLiE on December 18, 2007

I did, but i got deferred...

Posted by: Leko on December 18, 2007

Do any of you have friends? How do you get into MIT and have friends?

Posted by: Casey Calvert on December 18, 2007

@Julie: Yeah, pretty much.

@Casey: My friends asked the same question.

Posted by: Marc on December 18, 2007

@Casey

It's pretty easy actually.

Posted by: Snively on December 18, 2007

Casey,
Yeah MIT peeps have friends. I was Homecoming Queen. Now THAT was random (but exciting)!

@hoping for hope and asm
Heck, I'm actually planning to fast over Christmas Break. God will put us where he chooses according to his purpose--but he knows our hearts' desires and hears our prayers. Remember the parable of the persistent widow? Remember when Jacob wrestled with God? Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP! We may be Beavers yet!

Posted by: Twilight Bob on December 18, 2007

@Julie: No. But in math/science courses yes.

Posted by: Bryan on December 18, 2007

@ Leko,

you did xtra-curriculars too? and still got deferred?

Posted by: JuLiE on December 18, 2007

I'm in! But I feel so~ silly. I was so panic-ing about my semester ending this week that I didn't even realize that the decisions were posted online until I got an e-mail from my interviewer! I AM SO EXCITED! I hope to see all you other admittees come 2008! And good luck to all you deferred and regular action applicants!

Posted by: Lex! on December 19, 2007

@Twilight Bob, hoping for hope, and all other RA applicants

Yep, I'm inclined to believe the same thing, kind of the whole, "Whatever happens, happens...and things will turn out all right in the end."

Or, as my English teacher often reminds us, "Everything's Gonna Be OK," or EGBOK. =D

Here's a quote from DragonForce to keep the hope alive for us RA applicants (it's not perfect, but DragonForce is awesome anyway):

Hold on for the morning after
Never to let go
In the fires burning strong
When the tides of time roll on

So, the moral of this is to do the best we can for our apps and then just forget about it. It's out of our hands come January 1. And, as an added beacon of encouragement, think of Paul. He's a happy, productive MIT student -- he even became an admissions blogger freshman year! And he got in RA.

And once again, congratulations to the EA admits, all 522 of you (o_O). And for the deferred, well, come hope and pray with us! We're nice and loving people too! wink

Posted by: asm on December 19, 2007

@asm, hoping for hope, all the other RA folks.

Along with the praying--red and grey braces FTW! I had them adjusted today, and the rubber loops were replaced. It seemed appropriate.

Posted by: Twilight Bob on December 19, 2007

accepted but i think its easy and not exciting at all

Hey, if you don't want it, I'll take it. Don't be a douche and throw away the Oreos the universe has packed in your lunch today.

Posted by: Twilight Bob on December 19, 2007

@ Julie

Yeah I do everything from being president of NHS to being an Eagle scout but still got deferred... It just shows that even if you make perfect grades, participate in many extra-curriculars, and travel to distant countries like Samoa that you're still not guaranteed admission... Oh well, hoping for RA!

Posted by: Leko on December 20, 2007

@ Casie Calvert

Aren't you dead?

Posted by: Anon on December 20, 2007

Congratulations, guys! You really deserved to get in! I am going to apply to MIT for regular decision tomorrow.... I have a very good school record, and my interview was pretty good too.... but ppl, someone advise me... I think 2050 in SAT I is a disaster.... is it possible to get in with this score? especially a 570 on the CR was hopeless..... but, i got a 116 on the toefl and 1600 on SAT II (Math Level I and Chemistry)... please advise!

Congratulations once again to all of you... do party hard!

Posted by: Nervous on December 20, 2007

@ Nervous
I got in with a 2050 on my SAT I (and that is super-scored). And I know that a kid who was rejected got a 2380 on his SAT I. But that's not the only thing admissions considers. As long as admissions knows you will be able to handle the course work (and about 60% of the applicants can), they really don't care about test scores. More importantly, they want to know that you are passionate about something, that you care, that you have a great personality, that you will work hard and want to go change the world in some shape or form. Accomplishments and extra-curriculars really don't matter unless they give the admissions office insight into who you really are (so DO NOT just participate in extra-curriculars because they will look good on a resume and don't be a junior-joiner). MIT doesn't want some great test scores and good grades; they want the passionate person who got those test scores and grades. They also don't want a person who tries to come across as perfect because frankly, nobody is perfect. Now chances are you have already applied and you can't change anything, so just stop worrying. You will go where you are meant to go and everything is out of your hands at this point. Worrying isn't going to change anything, especially test scores. Now go find something fun to do to keep yourself busy and before you know it, the decisions will be out (and I can say this only because I've been through it). Hopefully this helps. The wait won't be easy (even if you stay busy), but you will get through it.

Posted by: D '12 on December 20, 2007

Guys do MIT accept people with a SAT I score of 1850?

Posted by: Anon on December 20, 2007

Probably not, but it is worth a try

Posted by: Ham on December 21, 2007

I was always more of an ACT person.

Posted by: archimedes on December 21, 2007

I thought I would be more of an ACT person too until I got like a 24 on the science section. All the other sections were 35s. I don't know why I did so bad, I am really good at science, but it was just reading graphs and not really science knowledge.

Posted by: Leko on December 21, 2007

I just took a look at the Stata Center on Google Earth. Nuts--in a good way. Absolutely nuts. All I have to say is, enjoy yourselves, EA admits.

Posted by: Twilight Bob on December 21, 2007

Ha, i looked at MIT on Google Earth a couple weeks ago too

Posted by: Leko on December 21, 2007

Best of luck. If you're an international applicant or your first language isn't English, I'm sure they'll take that into consideration. I took the ACT and got a 33 (stupid English section destroyed me as well). Hope all goes well.

Posted by: AR '12 on December 22, 2007

(if accpted) if you are ea, you get a tube...if you are ra you get a BIG envelope right¿?
and if not¿¿?

Posted by: 0 on December 22, 2007

@ Nervous

I guess that you are an international student since you took TOEFL as well. In fact, MIT only consider the better test score from either TOEFL or SATI for international applicants. However, the admission for internaltional applicants is very competitive and only 4-5% international applicants is admitted each year. In addition to having good test scores and GPA, most admitted internaltional students (I would say more than 70%) ever won international olympiad science (such as IMO, IPhO, IChO,...) or Intel science fair award. So, good luck on your application.

Posted by: Fred on December 22, 2007

I am really worried. I still have not received the tube. I live in Texas - anyone else in the same predicament?

Posted by: Arathi on December 24, 2007

As I stare at this blog, being a "9th grade student" in dream of becoming accepted to MIT... I become discouraged. Although I know that effort will be the key, there are millions of brilliant students out there, and to be selected as "the few" amongst them... it will not be a pleasant journey for me. I need someone who already took the path, who made it to MIT, to put his or her hand on my shoulders... and tell me the key points of becoming successful... Please?
