I can't even type right, my hands are shaking, my eyes are blurry, I'm a mess!!!!
I had never commented on any blog posts before because I didn't feel like I was in my right to do so. But now.....OMG. I can't believe this. For those of you that are as ecstatic as I am, guess what? We made it!!!
There's no better feeling. True, this wouldn't have been the end of the world had I not gotten in, but this is now definitely the start of a whole new world for us all. I can't wait to share the next FOUR YEARS of my life with such a great group of people at MIT. I hope you all take care and party hard (as I will be doing tonight in celebration)!!!!
And no, I still can't believe this.
By the way, what are you guys waiting for to start signing your name with...'12...OH yeah Baby!!!!

Here in California, we have the "cold" temperature of about 60 F, without a cloud in the sky, but I will still be sitting down to a bowl of New England Clam Chowder with my family to celebrate!

I'm so excited! I've been on the phone all morning telling my family! And I can't stop laughing! I can't stop using exclimation points!
So I'm from Oklahoma, and we just had this awful ice storm (we've actually been declared in a state of emergency) and like half the city is out of power, and my internet has been freaky because of it, and I was paranoid I wasn't going to be able to find out...but I did so its okay now, even though I woke up about five this morning out of nerves....yes this was all one sentence
See ya'll soon and contrats to everyone!

A jewish prayer meaning "Thank you G-d for allowing me to reach this day"-the first words out of my mouth after I clicked that button. I've wanted to go to MIT since I knew what MIT was, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here. I was convinced I was going to get deferred, even possibly rejected. And yet, here I am, sitting here in disbelief. Congrats to everyone who got in, and if you got deferred, its just a couple months away (who am I kidding, its forever from now). Good luck,
Greg

CELEBRATE! Last March, the night I was accepted, my family and a few close friends went out for dinner. Nothing too expensive or fancy, but it remains one of my most cherished memories.

Haha, j/k (kinda). I'd be so happy if I could join the admitted pool in a few months. It looks like such a long road from here. And even if I don't get accepted into MIT one day, it looks like I have double the (very low) chances of getting accepted into another uni in Cambridge, so I could still meet you all some day. But I'd still prefer MIT, even if the other one was ranked higher

@Archimedes: Psh, optional essays? Who does those things =P
Posted by: Marc on December 16, 2007
I wrote the optional something you've created essay about the motor my friend and I built at WTP this past summer. I explained our design then threw in a small anecdote about how I tried to power it with a 9V battery and some cheap wire at home and almost started a fire. (Wire overheated and started sparking)
In the other optional part I used that space for some bulleted clarifications to my app.

Hey, you're from Miami too?
I'm repping the 305—Hialeah, that is.
Yes, and in today's forecast we have some scattered rainshowers possibly followed by a cold front for tomorrow. Don't worry, the windchill factor will help drop the temperature. Predicted temp? 75 degrees. lol
Also, CAN ANYONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THEY REFER TO THE MAIL AS "THE TUBE"?
THANKS.

I look forward to meeting all of you at CPW! This makes all the work from the last 12 years totally worth it!
P.S. Other Matt F. are you from New Jersey?

When you apply Early action and you're accepted, you don't get an enveloppe, but a tube that contains a poster and other cool stuff. Yes, a tube, a real tube. You'll see when you'll get it ! ^^

Like Twilight Bob and everyone else has said, hope the best for us RD applicants. And mondo kudos to the MIT Admissions office for doing this kind of stressful job year in and year out. I, personally, couldn't bear the heart-wrenching myself -- even for one year. Hope you guys like our applications too!
(I just wish we would get a tube too!)
Oh, and has anyone else noticef that UC's essay prompt is almost word for word copied from MIT's Essay B? Methinks that UC may have been "influenced," perhaps... (Probably because MIT is so awesome anyway.)
You guys are all so amazing. If I get in, I can't wait to meet all of you. Man, people with my interests? Nothing could beat that. Just remember, as was said in an old engineering Time-Life book that profiled MIT, you guys are the "among the nation's brightest young students, hand-picked to lead us into the future" ... or words to that effect. Congratulations!

Heck, I'm actually planning to fast over Christmas Break. God will put us where he chooses according to his purpose--but he knows our hearts' desires and hears our prayers. Remember the parable of the persistent widow? Remember when Jacob wrestled with God? Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP! We may be Beavers yet!

you did xtra-curriculars too? and still got deferred?
Posted by: JuLiE on December 18, 2007
Posted by: Lex! on December 19, 2007
Yep, I'm inclined to believe the same thing, kind of the whole, "Whatever happens, happens...and things will turn out all right in the end."
Or, as my English teacher often reminds us, "Everything's Gonna Be OK," or EGBOK. =D
Here's a quote from DragonForce to keep the hope alive for us RA applicants (it's not perfect, but DragonForce is awesome anyway):
Hold on for the morning after
Never to let go
In the fires burning strong
When the tides of time roll on
So, the moral of this is to do the best we can for our apps and then just forget about it. It's out of our hands come January 1. And, as an added beacon of encouragement, think of Paul. He's a happy, productive MIT student -- he even became an admissions blogger freshman year! And he got in RA.
And once again, congratulations to the EA admits, all 522 of you (o_O). And for the deferred, well, come hope and pray with us! We're nice and loving people too!
Posted by: asm on December 19, 2007
Along with the praying--red and grey braces FTW! I had them adjusted today, and the rubber loops were replaced. It seemed appropriate.

Posted by: Twilight Bob on December 19, 2007
Yeah I do everything from being president of NHS to being an Eagle scout but still got deferred... It just shows that even if you make perfect grades, participate in many extra-curriculars, and travel to distant countries like Samoa that you're still not guaranteed admission... Oh well, hoping for RA!

I got in with a 2050 on my SAT I (and that is super-scored). And I know that a kid who was rejected got a 2380 on his SAT I. But that's not the only thing admissions considers. As long as admissions knows you will be able to handle the course work (and about 60% of the applicants can), they really don't care about test scores. More importantly, they want to know that you are passionate about something, that you care, that you have a great personality, that you will work hard and want to go change the world in some shape or form. Accomplishments and extra-curriculars really don't matter unless they give the admissions office insight into who you really are (so DO NOT just participate in extra-curriculars because they will look good on a resume and don't be a junior-joiner). MIT doesn't want some great test scores and good grades; they want the passionate person who got those test scores and grades. They also don't want a person who tries to come across as perfect because frankly, nobody is perfect. Now chances are you have already applied and you can't change anything, so just stop worrying. You will go where you are meant to go and everything is out of your hands at this point. Worrying isn't going to change anything, especially test scores. Now go find something fun to do to keep yourself busy and before you know it, the decisions will be out (and I can say this only because I've been through it). Hopefully this helps. The wait won't be easy (even if you stay busy), but you will get through it.

I guess that you are an international student since you took TOEFL as well. In fact, MIT only consider the better test score from either TOEFL or SATI for international applicants. However, the admission for internaltional applicants is very competitive and only 4-5% international applicants is admitted each year. In addition to having good test scores and GPA, most admitted internaltional students (I would say more than 70%) ever won international olympiad science (such as IMO, IPhO, IChO,...) or Intel science fair award. So, good luck on your application.
