You should live in Burton-Conner! by Snively '11

What you won't see in the i3 video!

I found an old clip on YouTube that I uploaded a long time ago that I somehow never blogged.

One day, Adelaide ’09 and I realized that we both had pirate hats, lab coats, and light sabers (I know, right?). So, what do you do with these three items? You make this video. And then you tell everybody who watches this video that, if they live in Burton-Conner, they can do this too!

    What would you say are the major differences between East Campus and West Campus? (I’m new to the site so I really don’t have any idea)

    @Snively
    What (in your opinion) is special about Burton-Conner?

  3. NathanArce says:

    I was under the impression that LARPing-style things aren’t generally a west-campus quirk in the first place, so wouldn’t that make you two an exception? :3

    The one time I have a semi-decent FIRST post, and I miss it.

    Like the pirate hat though, BC looks like a cool dorm.

    Me next!

    This isn’t LARPing, this is just a fight. Fights happen all the time in West Campus, especially in Burton-Conner. Check out the very first blog entry I wrote. We also fight with Nerf guns and water. That day, the weapon happened to be lightsabers.

    @Anonymous
    Why do I like Burton-Conner? It’s like an East Campus satellite in West Campus, a toned down East Campus. We paint our walls, modify our dorm, build stuff, cook our own food, and are really participatory in Orientation and East Campus/West Campus “mingling.” Burton-Conner has also been around for a long time, meaning each of the floors has had time to develop traditions and a history. The cultures between floors and the tight-knit nature of different floors is a big draw. Doors are always open everybody knows each other.

  7. Ann says:

    Snively, do you think you would’ve been happy in EC? I think those are the two dorms that I’d like the most, but I’m having trouble deciding which one is more amazing…

  8. Snively says:

    @Ann
    Initially I was super sketched out by EC, but that’s changed. I could definitely see myself being happy in EC. I’ve spent some time on 1E, 3E, 2W (which I accidentally ended up giving a floor tour of), and if I didn’t live in BC it’d definitely be EC.

    I’ve heard several people who live in EC say that the only other dorm they’d consider is BC. BC and EC are the top 2 choices for a lot of people in the lottery, they’re very common to be torn between.

  9. Piper '12 says:

    So BC’s becoming more Random-like? raspberry

  10. Lainers '12 says:

    @ Olive: Average commute time to first lecture of the day is worth mentioning smile

  11. NathanArce says:

    Hence why I added “-style things”, Snively. By definition you were role-playing pirates =P

  12. NathanArce says:

    (in lab coats and with futuristic technology, of course)

  13. leilani says:

    This is like watching a big bang theory episode.

    I was, as well, torn between EC and BC, but wound up (after lots of very interesting conversations) in EC. Most of the time I’m happy with my decision/result. Especially February-ish when there’s slush everywhere, and when it’s raining.

    Seriously, though – unfortunately the readjustment lottery isn’t what it used to be with ranked choices for temp housing – but TALK to people during Rush/REX. I made some enemies that way, but I also found out a LOT by accosting people in hallways, stairwells, courtyards, lobbys, and the like.

  15. Vivian '12 says:

    @Olive: East Campus is, generally, more of the “no-limits, party-hard-like-there’s-no-manana” type. This doesn’t mean they neglect their studies, though – some of the smartest people I know are living in EC and Senior Haus, and you’ll find that they people on East Campus are very proud of their nerdiness. They are the epitome of the work-hard-play-hards.

    West Campus is a little “tamer”, although we definitely have our share of quirks. Happenings tend to be more “stereotypical” on West Campus – block parties, socials, cookouts, Nerf gun battles, etc. East Campus events, however, range from wrestling in chocolate frosting to riding homemade roller-coasters to dropping hundreds of bouncy balls from the roof.

    I find that it’s a lot better to look at dorms individually, though, than lumping them into East and West campus. Yeah, the two sides of campus have their own overarching stereotypes but each of the dorms is quite different from the others as well.

  16. Olive says:

    Thanks! I must say, I like the sounds of East Campus wink

    We played the pirates theme in band class.

    ‘Tis fun on the bassoon. :3

    I lived in BC, but seriously considering readjusting to EC during the lottery and sort of idly wondered about this decision for the next 4 years. I think I’d have been perfectly happy either way. As previously mentioned, there are many people who feel similarly.

    Also, I wouldn’t say that BC is Random-like, just Conner 2. =)

  19. Piper '12 says:

    @Laura – I figured not. The video just reminded me of Random, where much boffering takes place :D

    I dunno, I think EC and BC don’t differ drastically in how much they party. They’re more party-ish than some dorms (though different flavors).

  20. Vivian '12 says:

    In all honesty, I feel most dorms “party” about the same amount; they just have different definitions of “party.” Here on Next 4th floor, “party” means cranking up the music and doing line dances at 12am, or playing Rockband for five hours straigh. Some of my friends at other dorms go for a more “traditional” party with glowsticks and techno, and others just invent their own wacky ideas.

  21. Piper '12 says:

    I’m not sure how we’re defining “party” anymore… I was thinking more about the parties that get thrown on Fridays or Saturdays, not about all the ways we goof off and have fun with each other :D

  22. Adelaide '09 says:

    I still can’t believe that I didn’t manage to properly open up my lightsaber at the beginning. So un-suave.

  23. Vaibhav says:

    @ Snively
    Where can we see the i3 videos from all the dorms?
    And you’re back at MIT now or are you still at home??
