Since I Been Gone by Mitra L. '07
Running and nice weather -- and no school
Note: I am shamelessly stealing the title of this entry from Sam ’07, who is a more educated but less devout Kelly Clarkson fan than I am.
The weather at MIT has been delicious the past week or so. My friends from UCLA (go Bruins!) visited last week, and couldn’t believe how warm and sunny it was here. Apparently in San Francisco (where we’re all from), it has rained for 25 of the past 31 days. (And apparently it is a good thing that the last time they visited was in August.)
Anyway, I was in New York City this weekend, where I had an excellent time eating five meals a day and undoing an entire month’s worth of exercise. Bring it on, Boston Marathon!
Speaking of which…Last year, I watched the marathon from Phi Sigma Kappa‘s house in Kenmore Square, where I drank free Snapple, cheered for the runners, and not-so-jokingly announced I would run the marathon in 2006. I have since learned that Phi Sig is about a mile away from the finish line, so if I can use the desire to see MIT people to motivate me until Kenmore, hopefully I can make it through that last mile until the end.
There are also two 5Ks affiliated with MIT fraternities I am considering running: the Back Bay 5K this Saturday (4/8), and Anderson’s Race after the marathon (4/22). The former is to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and is being sponsored by Chi Phi fraternity; the latter is to raise money for leukemia research, and was started by some brothers and residents of Phi Beta Epsilon fraternity.
Okay, my legs are tired from all this talking about running. It’s time to link to some official athletes.
Caroline, I hope you were not using Celsius when you suggested that New England gets to be around 85 degrees in the summer.
Don’t use aerosol products containing CFCs.
MITRA IS RUNNING THE MARATHON!
is it bad luck to wish runners “good luck” ? i can’t imagine “break a leg” would be much better. anyway, happy birthday. btw, it started raining and shit the day after you three left my apartment. coincedence?
peace,
-v
I hear its your BIRTHDAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!
yay. you must be old…. teehee.
Hope to meet you in person at CPW
it has been unsually rainy here in sf – can’t wait to enjoy the good weather during CPW =)
Speaking of weather, what’s the average temperature during the winter/summer up there? I know almost no summer can compare to a Texan summer of daily triple digit temperatures, and I’m all for double-digit highs, but winters here rarely get below 30 degrees. This in no way will affect my desires of attending MIT, but I don’t want to be unprepared.
Alberto — Usually summers in New England its 85 degrees or so. A heat wave means its hitting 95-100.
Winters are cold. And snowy. January highs are almost always below zero (around 20?) and lows can be negative (wind chills of like, minus 20).
But usually it’s somewhere in between, and hey, NE weather is always surprising!!
(If you want to compare your hometown to the weather in Cambridge, Weather.com has some good features… go to Averages/records, it’s somewhere around there. Graphs and everything, so it’s even good for math geeks like us)
It’s interesting to note that when I say “below zero” I really mean “below freezing”…
Evidently we all colloquially switch between C and F in our heads.
thats awesome that your doing the boston marathon…
im running in london on April 23rd…so from one marathoner to another, best of luck!!!

Happy Birthday!
Have a wonderful birthday Mitra!!
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Mitra,
Good luck running the Boston Marathon. I ran Jersey Shore many years ago and it was a blast for about 20 miles. The last few miles were not easy. Fortunately you will have something to look forward to near the end. Enjoy.
