Regular Action Decisions: Sunday 3/14

Posted in: Process & Statistics

MIT Admissions plans to make Regular Action decisions available online on Sunday, March 14 at 2:00 PM EDT... actually, we’ll probably have decisions posted a minute before 2pm.

Receiving your decision online is as easy as pi. When decisions are released, simply visit decisions.mit.edu and log in using the same username and password that you use to log into your MyMIT account. There are no interim screens, so you should be sure you are ready to receive your decision online before logging in to decisions.mit.edu.

To ensure that you will receive a decision online, please visit decisions.mit.edu and enter your username and password. Decisions.mit.edu will be available through the decision date for applicants to confirm their login ability and decision eligibility.

If you've forgotten your MyMIT password, you may use our automated system to reset it. Simply visit my.mit.edu and click on the lost password link. There is a similar link for forgotten usernames. If you're having trouble using our automated username/password recovery process, please email mymitpassword@mit.edu with your full name and mailing address.

Admissions decisions will be available exclusively online. Decisions will not be released via email, snail mail, carrier pigeon, or Nekobasu special delivery (still working on that). Following the release of admissions decisions, however, we will be mailing necessary materials to admitted students.

I wish you all the best!

Nice subtle pi reference. . .

Yay! I can't wait. (Hopefully I will be as happy as I am not about this on Sunday as well.)

Posted by: Saman Moniri on March 4, 2010

Good Luck Everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We should start Nekobasu service next year ^.^

Posted by: Rahul on March 4, 2010

ten days.

sigh.

Posted by: Matto on March 4, 2010

THE most stressful day of 2010!

Posted by: Andrew on March 4, 2010

I will be leaving on March 14 to go to South Korea and my flight leaves at 12:55, so I will have to wait an extra 13 hours to see my decision! :(
I cant wait to find out!

Posted by: Nate on March 4, 2010

Maybe our decisions will become available exactly 26 and a half seconds after 1:59?

Posted by: Chelsea on March 4, 2010

Wish you all the best,
I hope if we all will get accepted ^.*

Posted by: Ahmed on March 4, 2010

Ew... This means I'll have to wait another 9 days for my MIT decision and CCC results. I can't risk to see my CCC results before MIT decision, thanks to quantum physics and law of conservation of luck. Something really lucky happened on me during CCC.

Posted by: Kenneth ('14?) on March 4, 2010

Thank you SO MUCH for working so hard to get decisions out by March 14. With the increase in applications it must have been harder but I promise you the effort to keep things on pi day is not unappreciated. smile

Posted by: Liz '14 on March 4, 2010

YES! Thank you Matt! I was really hoping for pi day decisions!
Good Luck to everyone!

Posted by: Tim ('14?) on March 4, 2010

Good luck everyone! =D

Posted by: Rehan ('14?) on March 4, 2010

So excited for the pi day now!!! Thanks so much for the update Matt!! And All The Best everyone!!! =)

Posted by: Ira on March 4, 2010

@Chelsea: Haha, 3.141592...nice one smile

YES! THE TORTURE IS NEARLY OVER!!! Does anyone else feel like even being rejected will be less painful than 6 months of waiting (or 3 if you were RA)?

My friend in Germany and I are going to have to figure out the time difference so we can open our decisions at the same time...

Good luck everyone! Hope you all get in!

(*Prays* I would be the first person in my school's history to get into an Ivy, much less MIT. All the administrators are making me promise to text/email them the results over spring break...)

Posted by: Amethyst ('14?) on March 4, 2010

Why couldn't they have had it on e day, we could have found out so much sooner smile

Posted by: Lucas on March 4, 2010

Nice, I can't believe the college process is finally coming to an end, thank god, I need to get on with my life smile Good luck guys!

Posted by: Mohammad'14 on March 4, 2010

Posted by: 0 on March 4, 2010

And now the nerves begin. Good luck to everyone!

Posted by: Florida '14 (hopefully) on March 4, 2010

What? MIT can't release their decisions at exactly pi? That's a violation of my paradox!

Posted by: Zeno (468 BCE) on March 4, 2010

This seems as good a time as any to start linking to my MIT countdown/chatroom:

http://www.airpoke.com/mitchat/

I threw it together about a week before EA decisions came out and it got pretty crazy in there (especially on decision night; there were about 30 people and we were all freaking out... :D)

(Also CAPTCHA: "gas fondling." What.)

Posted by: Anshu Chimala on March 4, 2010

Every time I even think about this, my heart seems to beat twice as fast. The wait is killing me, and I don't know yet how I will take it if I'm not accepted, let's hope I never have to.

Posted by: Eskild Eriksen on March 4, 2010

EDT is the same as EST, right? D:

Posted by: Helena on March 4, 2010

Finally !!!!!!

4:00 A.M. 15 March 2010 .....

Does anybody out there come across with sth like premonition?????? I think I do.... and I am feeling pretty bad about it :(

I feel like I have known the result 3 weeks before the result release date...and this really wears me out

Posted by: lydia on March 4, 2010

Pi day again! *-*

I'm VERY anxious.

Posted by: Caio ('14?) on March 4, 2010

Now I just have to worry about being wait-listed!

So much waiting already!

Good luck to everyone!

Posted by: Jacob ('14?) on March 4, 2010

That said even if I am wait-listed it will all be worth it if I get in!

Posted by: Jacob ('14?) on March 4, 2010

OMG...I'm so anxious...
can't wait for pi day...GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
may the mass times acceleration be with you...hahaha

Posted by: Anonymous ('14?) on March 4, 2010

The countdown begins... Best wishes for everyone!!

(reCAPTCHA: 'in fearless' hmm...)

Posted by: Christine ('14?) on March 4, 2010

I would really like to get my decision through mail, instead of online. I am willing to wait. When will paper decisions be mailed? Will they be mailed to all regular decisions applicants?

Posted by: Tesh '14?! :) on March 4, 2010

Oh dear! Can anybody realize how tough it is for an internatinal student (with only a 3% chance)?

For some intl students, trapped in cram systems, its an ultimate fight to break into a world of opportunities, which they have always been denied.
(The educational systems of some countries are really bad!)

These days all my prayers are like:
"Dear Mr. God, please make me a bird. So that I could fly far. Far far away from here."
(Guess the source!)

**************GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE**************

Posted by: mrmish on March 4, 2010

@mrmish: oh yeah! I know what the phrase "third world" really means.

Posted by: martin on March 4, 2010

However this turns out for my daughter, this is the best admissions office in the country, and the process has been excellent. Thank you for making it a pleasant experience.

Posted by: Anonymous Mom on March 4, 2010

^ Oh no, I'm not from a third world country. I'm from India. Here there are plenty of opportunities for professional studies but no incentives for pure sciences at UG level.(Esp. for my area of interest - Astronomy/Astrophysics)

Posted by: mrmish on March 4, 2010

Thanks for the update!! I can't wait!!!
Good luck everyone smilesmile

Posted by: Suhartati('14?) on March 4, 2010

This is hardcore exciting. I'm counting down the minutes (13804 left if anyone is wondering).

Posted by: Dillon('14?) on March 4, 2010

Finally a date is released
Waiting anxiously now for 15th March.
BEST OF LUCK EVERYONE

Posted by: Divyansh on March 4, 2010

@ Tesh '14?! smile paper decisions are not mailed,I believe online is the only way to know, unless you are accepted then other stuff comes in the mail that you need but i don't think that will be for a while

Posted by: Anonymous on March 4, 2010

@mrmish: I agree with you mrmish. I knew that my city, S√£o Paulo, had a very bad educational system. But after I saw the U.S. system in this whole application process, I now know that S√£o Paulo's educational system is even worse than I thought.

My heart is beating way over the normal limit, everytime I see a pi symbol from now on I am going to freak out.

Good Luck everyone : )

Posted by: André('14?) on March 4, 2010

Good luck everyone! I´m seriously nervous!

Posted by: Jorge on March 4, 2010

I will not be able to concentrate at all on my math test tomorrow. Calculus of polar curves. WAY too much pi.

Posted by: Tim ('14?) on March 4, 2010

I can't even imagine what I'll feel like if I see a huge "UNSECCESSFUL" or "SORRY U WEREN'T GOOD ENUF" as soon as I log in....

Posted by: SS3 Gaara on March 4, 2010

I can't wait to go through this wait again

Posted by: 0 on March 4, 2010

Matt,
My tracker states that MIT has still not processed my Midyear Report; should I resubmit it? Or is this normal?

Thank you.

Posted by: James Mackovjak on March 4, 2010

Well, I'm glad MIT is able to send out in March before everywhere else. As American sports legend Charles Barkley once wrote, "April is the cruelest month."

I'm almost positive he wrote that.

- A list of friends and relatives I need to phone with their numbers
- A list of local mental institutes with their numbers

After all, these mental institutes are also institutes smile

Hi!

I just wanted to thank you all, applicants and the people running this site, for... well, I don't know, but I think we have been kind of a family, haven't we... ?
I guess that this feeling, apart from the dreams, is what has driven me to reapply this year (yes, I got rejected the last time). What else can I say...? The applications process has been a long but beautiful journey, I got to meet some nice people from MIT and other Universities, participated in competitions, Olympiads, read MIT blogs, and met an applicant whom I am now in a (my first) relationship with... a lot has happened since Dec 2008... Experiences, of making friends, feeling a common anticipation, having my mobile pickpoketed (yes, that WAS related to admissions wink 03/14, 04/01... I owe it all to you.

So my thanks and Love to everyone. I wish you the best of luck. I have never had much luck myself (consider being unable to participate in the International Informatics Olympiad because Bulgaria (where I happened) does not have an Embassy in your country :( )... But still I will keep my fingers crossed smile

Regards from 22°N, 91°E

Note, there is a time change next Saturday, as daylight savings time takes over. Thus, EDT, not EST, rules. This means that your results will be available an hour earlier than you think if you fail to reset your clocks. 2:00 EDT = 1:00 EST. Celebrate!

For some reason I'm not feeling anxious, worried, or anticipation in anyway, is that bad ?

@everyone complaining about their countries
I'm not too hot about the idea of going to "the land of opportunities" but I am for MIT, MIT is itself said land for me.
If my country doesn't have opportunity X which I'm passionate about then I'll work on creating it for me and others, something I do plan to work on.
I advise you do so as well ^_^

Posted by: Beverly Marion '14?? on March 5, 2010

Oh well though compared to the US educational system, my country's is quite bad, I'm contented with living here, studying here and enjoying life here, and would never ask for a chance to return back. I'm not that desperate to run for a place at MIT. Whatever it will be, acceptance or rejection, I deserve what I deserve to have, and I'll be happy with it smile

@Ammar: No. At least, staying calm and you won't find your room a mess before 1:59 EDT :D Just wait until 1:58 EDT and we will see if your heart breaks raspberry

All these happy people, and the vast vast majority of you will be throwing out the profanities and hating MIT one week from Sunday.

Posted by: '13 on March 5, 2010

Guys, I sincerely wish good luck to every one of you. I know how much effort and time you have spent to get to your dreams. Unfortunately not all of us can get in, but I wish it was so...
And even if I dont get in, I am thankful for what I felt and feel right now. These were probably the best few months of my life.
And thanks to MIT Admissions for having such a great team that sends out decisions earlier than everybody else.

Posted by: L '14? on March 5, 2010

I've put myself in a pretty bad situation. I spent most of February in an international debate tournament and so missed most of my mid year exams. I finished making up for them and got my official scores yesterday and sent my mid-year report today.

This is pretty bad. With decisions only 9 days away, I'm pretty sure I goofed this up pretty bad.

Now, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with his and tell me if there's anything else I should be doing.

Posted by: Southpaw '14? on March 5, 2010

I thought it would never happen, but after reading this entry I have become unusually stressful.

as Thermody-man-x said "journey was worth the while", it definitely was. After all, experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

Also another piece of advice from my own experience, nothing works like a huge KDE coundown widget in the middle of your desktop to boost your stress levels. Make sure it shows the remaning seconds smile

reCAPTCHA: leader naps :D

Posted by: mrmish on March 5, 2010

@mrmish
According to the admission statistics page, the number of freshman applications last year was 15661, and according to a recent blog by Matt, this year has seen a 6% increase in applications, meaning there are about 16600 students applying this year.

If we use the same rates of last year we decrease the number by 28.6% (EA not admittedwithdrawn).

So we have approximately 11853 people waiting for decisions, about 0.7% of home commented on this blog ^_^

Posted by: Ammar on March 5, 2010

I tried logging into admissions. I got this:

You have successfully confirmed your ability to view your decision online, which will be available beginning at 1:59PM Eastern Time on Sunday, March 14.

LOL. Good stuff

Posted by: Brad on March 5, 2010

I know for certain that after I see my decision, I'm going to calmly walk to my car with a blank expression on my face, get in, lock the doors, and scream as loud as i possibly can. Then get out of the car as if nothing happened.

Several of my friends have received emails regarding the decision release date, whereas I haven't. Are they sending emails only to people who got in?

Posted by: Hopeful on March 5, 2010

Oh my GOD! MIT is the best place in the world. I have been there last week. It was amazing. I am in love with MIT and with Boston too! I dont know what would I do if I dont get into it !

Posted by: Augusto Correnti on March 5, 2010

i read something about an email that notified you about the day and time when you should check for your result.

i am an international and i was curious if any international applicants received this email because i haven't received one yet.

i don't think MIT would discard any applicant who didn't get in just by not telling them when to check their decisions... would they?

Posted by: babo on March 6, 2010

Is it because they have subscribe matt's blog?

OMG!I'm so nervous about the result. My place time zone is 12 hours ahead of MA, so I might have to stay up until 15/3 2:00a.m.!!!!!

Posted by: ryath on March 6, 2010

I wonder if reCaptcha uses some sort of AdSense like thing. I got the feynman.

Oh yeah, and I'm so nervous/excited! To get in would be like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

Posted by: Tyler (14?) on March 6, 2010

I still can't believe I called the date right.

"The same day HGSS comes out, and the same day as Pi day, I will know what happens with MIT."

Prophesy or just plain coincidence? You make the call... on Pi day.

Posted by: Logan on March 6, 2010

This is way too awkward and weird, even for me. Yes I am worried/excited/freaked-out like most/all of you and i cant think of any Intelligent/Funny comment to comment on which you guys can comment and then I can feel really cool. But if I subtract all the Lame-ness then all I have to say is that in the last couple of months I actually/truly did learn a lot about myself and had some really amazing experiences both good and bad and ugly but never-the-less AMAZING (and I am not lying). I know at this point none of you would bother to read what I write further and move up/down to see what others wrote , so I will just end it here and instead of wishing that Every-one got in to the class of 2014 to MIT I would rather go and pray to god now that he gives us what he thinks is best for us ... Ameen

Posted by: The confu?sed Kid on March 6, 2010

@People wondering about emails: Don't worry about it. I think it just takes a while for all of them to be sent out. During EA, my email didn't come until a few days after Matt's announcement on the blogs, but it came. Also, check your spam.

Posted by: 0 on March 6, 2010

They should make it come out only 33 and a half seconds earlier than 2pm.

Posted by: Ryan Yoo on March 6, 2010

I am waiting hopelessly for results. anyway, good luck and godspeed to EVERYONE! smile

Posted by: Dawn Estep on March 6, 2010

Totally diggin' the Pi day release time. =)

I must say, in retrospect I found it comical that when I logged into the admissions page yesterday and saw the notice "You have successfully confirmed your ability to view your decision online, which will be available beginning at 1:59PM Eastern Time on Sunday, March 14," my heartbeat literally quickened after reading the first three words of the notice.

Not sure how I assumed a sentence-long message to be the "congratulatory message" of an acceptance by such an amazing school, but hey, all of us are a bit anxious now, aren't we? tongue laugh

Posted by: Christian '14? on March 6, 2010

No Pi for us!

No, i am not being extremely pessimistic about my admission result, rest assured i am not talking about the much awaited decisions. This post is about when i will get it, and being in India i will get it on 3/15, 12:29 am. Pakistani applicants will be the last ones, geographically, to get their results on 3/14, and they will get it just a minute before the next day starts, lucky pie for them. Now before going into depression due to this unavoidable unfairness on MIT's part, i decided to give it a thought, 3/15, and here is what emerged. If we write the 3 digits, 315, and do the following, 3+1 and 1+5, the new date we get is 4/6, and what else, that is my birth date, the day i emerged in this world, with tears of unbound joy, this may just be the second time i do that, may be, hopefully.
Best of luck to all of you 16000+ students who will be glued to the computer at the same time some time next week, including me.

Now recaptcha is getting really innovative and maybe becoming some kind of a fortune teller or maybe just poking fun at us, i had to type the following to prove that i am a human: qualified ernest

MIT bloggers, html tags are not working, i had used a few in my post and they didn't show up, now i know this place looks much more beautiful due to the lack of them, but then there is a line above that promises me the ability to go mad with tags, for style.

Thanks Matt for posting the admissions date .. I have been waiting for it for a very long time
Inshallah we will all hear some good news on Pi Day!

Good Luck Everybody I wish you all the best!

Pssssh, doesn't MIT know that it doesn't switch over to EDT until 2:00 a.m. on March 14th?

Posted by: Alec on March 6, 2010

^Never mind that, for some reason I misread the original post as saying 1:59 a.m. instead of p.m. (how embarrassing, considering the nature of my post!)

Anyway, to everyone saying they "don't know what they'll do if they get rejected by MIT:" your education is what you make it. There are hundreds of great schools in the world and if you're even applying to MIT, there's no doubt that you could get into at least one of them. Sure, being at MIT would be nice, but not every great scientist or engineer of the world is an MIT graduate.

Posted by: Camille '14 on March 6, 2010

Ahhhhhhh!!!! Good luck everyone!!! I'm anxious even though i'm not applying until next yearXD. But I'll be in the same shoes as everyone next year. And yea, they should start Nekobasu next yearxD. Good luck!

Posted by: 0 on March 6, 2010

OMG due to Daylight savings time we would get our results one hour earlier than we would if we were to get it before that( So everyone on here from India who thought their results would come out on 15th - you all just got lucky and would get it on the pi day now).

super excited!!! :D

Posted by: Ira on March 6, 2010

The pi concept is awesome. We find out March 14 (3.14) at 1:59 (3.14159). I can't wait

Posted by: Matt K on March 6, 2010

AHHH Only one more week!
I almost think the waiting is much more relaxed than EA when everyone was on here/CC freaking out. Although, I am partially to blame for this, considering that I started the countdown thread.

Fortunately for me, this is my busiest week of the year, so I will be extremely occupied until about 2AM on sunday.

1900 SAT1. 650 math L1 ,660 chemistry.
3.9 GPA, 6A*s 1A in IGCSE O level. 3 A's predicted on my Alevel physics chemistry and math.
Senior year GPA so far is 4.0

Someone help me? How does it look ?

Posted by: Anomalous Applicant on March 7, 2010

@ Anomalous Applicant
The SAT scores are out of the interquartile range that MIT quoted for entrance into the class of 2013 but the other stuff looks good. Although, it is kind of late to be worrying about that stuff now.

I haven't gotten any emails from admissions yet :O. I'm scared, it's been 3 days. As with all the persons who didn't get emails, it makes me wonder if i got in. I know that Anonymous on March 6, 2010 02:38 AM said he didn't get his for a few days after the post but still. So panicked now. *sigh*

Posted by: Brad on March 7, 2010

I will start crossing my fingers right away!! :D

Posted by: Wang Wei on March 7, 2010

I dont think we're supposed to receive an email.... it's only if you're subscribed to Matt's Blog do you get an email. Just sit back, and enjoy the wait along with all of us...

I SERIOUSLY cant take this much longer, i wish pi was 2 point something!! raspberry

Less than a week to go... 6 days, 23 hours, 54 mins, 47 seconds to be precise...

And of course the forum time mocks me by being a minute (or possibly just some seconds) off from my personal countdown...

Posted by: Anonymous ('14?) on March 7, 2010

Ahhhh... the anxiety sinks in.

Why isn't the Nekobasu delivery still not available??

Posted by: Mehmet '14? on March 7, 2010

I've been asking that question to myself again and again since I clicked the submit button. But now the questions are getting more frequent and desperate! I don't know what to do!

Btw.. does anyone know how the decision letter look like? Admit or Reject :( or waitlist? whatever?

Posted by: Yes or No? on March 7, 2010

I just can't stand waiting anymore. I just want to know so I can send in money and stuff to MIT or another college I was accepted to. AARRRGGHHH waiting is infuriating.

As a mother of an anxious applicant, I've read these blogs with tears in my eyes. After 30 years, I had forgotten the anticipation & excitement of beginning Freshman year. I'm now equally nervous for all of you. While MIT is the most prestigious university in my mind- I believe the future is in safe hands wherever you bright kids attend. Thank you & best of luck to all. C ya in a week!

Curse your circles and tell me before I burst with anticipation!

I am so much more stressed about this than my daughter. She would be happy to attend MIT but also really likes Vanderbilt, Columbia, etc. Her physics teacher is also really hoping that she'll be accepted because we live in a rural area and he's never had a student attend MIT before. I just hope that the kids who aren't accepted don't stress too much. Everything happens for a reason and it is the person, not the institution that will change the world. Hang in there everyone!

However, getting wait listed. That would drive me crazy!

In case of the international applicants, 3636 applied and 123 was admitted last year. It means that MIT had to choose roughly 1 person in 30 for a given place. What is more, number of applicants increased this year.
So I suppose that the most wise aproach is just to be almost totally prepared for a rejection. Unfortunately.

Good luck everyone.

Szymon

Dear bro & sis

Regarding the email issue, as I know it will be out in 10th of Mar, so be patient. Also it doesn't make deference if you got it or not.
I think it's just a psychological thing ^.*, you want to make sure that Admission office cares about you or not, or something like that.

Sincerely,

*sigh* When I don't think about MIT, I don't care much about it. But when I start looking back at the website and everything, I realize what an awesome place it is and how much I want to get in... Less than a week now. I'll be on my senior class trip, so hopefully the pain of rejection will be softened.

Posted by: Kelly on March 9, 2010

To all those who have assumed they will be rejected, please don't do that, for two reasons-
1 You applied because you had hope, you wanted to get in, you tried your best, applied and thats over, now just hope, don't panic, don't assume things, let the day come and accept whatever decision comes your way. 10 or maybe 20 years later it won't matter if you did your ug in MIT, but what would matter is that what you did in whatever university you went to. And you will also regret the time you wasted in anxiety surrounding all this. Its not that i have no tension at all, but when it tries to take over, i just come here and read some posts and once i am calm i go back to whatever i have to do. As MIT says on the decisions page, don't run away from the anxiety, but then don't let it bog you down, embrace it, then move on, don't think too much about the result, let it come to you when it has been destined.

2 You have paid $90 to MIT to employ some great people to decide on your applications, trust them that they will make a right decision, don't do their job by declaring your acceptance/rejection before MIT does, there is no point, your job was to apply and you have done that.

Sit back and enjoy.

And i am trying to catch up with all the great MIT International Applicants, so i have made this group, please join it to know more about each other-
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=347523173317

Posted by: Utkarsh on March 9, 2010

@Utkarsh
The application fee was 75$. Interestingly enough, when you multiply it by the number of all people who applied a year ago (15661) you get 1174575 US dollars (1.2 million $).
(Some people applied for the fee waiver but on the other hand the number of applicants increased this year.)
I don't have anything against it - actually I am proud that I (well, my parents) supported one of the finest universities on this planet.

Szymon

(Since in this game being paranoid is always a good thing..)

Could there be a reason that we got our email notification at different times? I just got mine a few minutes ago and I've been wondering if our admission decision could be inferred from early or late email notification..

Did anyone just receive their email?

One thing is for sure, the anxiety IS rising exponentially. I build (build = engineer word!) and solve math problems when I am anxious, to keep myself distracted. Here is one of my favorites to keep you busy for some time (that is, if you like math problem; ignore otherwise)

Food-for-thought : Consider a complex number (aka Imaginary Number). Now, associate the real coefficient with the X-axis and the imaginary coefficient on the Y-axis; so the point is (x,y). Now the value of the imaginary coefficient at the same point in space in another number plane is given by 3x + 2y, where x and y have their original values. Similarly, the imaginary coefficient of the same point in the third plane is 3(x1) + 2 (y1) where x1 and y1 are the real and imaginary coefficients on the second plane. This goes on till n planes. What is the modulus of the difference between the values of the same complex number in the nth plane and the original plane if there exists a plane such that is encompasses the domain of both the planes?

Notes (+ Hints):
1. We assume that the real and imaginary planes are always at right angles to each other.

2. a. We assume that all planes are in different axes but somehow coincide in the same region.

2. b. According to high school physics/math there are only three axes, but lets us assume that is not the case here. That is not the case anyway; we have been taught incomplete information.

2. c. If you are still adamant that it is not possible and must know, consider that this case takes place in curved space (physics). But that does not have to be included in the calculation, mostly because it will complicate the answer (and slightly also because the curve has not been specified and an answer cannot be calculated when the question does not provide the information needed to solve it). And yes, this means that a plane does not always have to be flat.

3. (Hint) Position and distance are not functions of each other in the largest frame of reference that includes all the planes (plainspeak : Two points that share the same position, but are in different reference planes, do not necessarily have to coincide) You can put it this way : Distance is relative.

4. (Hint) This is more of an algebra problem. And this can be solved without the knowledge of any formulae/advanced math.

I think I pretty much covered everything needed to solve this one, I'll add if I find that I missed something. smile

Captcha : Return grayed.

Bad omen? *Anxiety scale crawls up up 5 points*

now wait a minute, is MIT prepared to handle the traffic that's coming their way at 1:59 pm? Or god forbid a bunch of eager applicants refreshing the page EVERY SECOND?

Posted by: Jens ('14?) on March 10, 2010

The tension is building every day. I was deferred from EA and this is my second "pre-decisions week", but this time the stress is much much more!

I encourage everyone to engage in their favorite hobby/activity to soften the wait, in some cases, time does manage to fly! For Sunday i booked a Cessna for the whole afternoon to go have lunch near Florence with my flight instructor, at least flying will keep my mind off decisions for a few hours.

Yeah, it will come at last... the judgement day :D
For me it will be on 15, so I wish luck for all of us.

If you will be accepted, congratulations, you are given the one of the finest ticket of success in your future, and once again congratulations, I'm proud of your achievement as a fellow applicant, and everyone should feel the same about it :D

If you will be not accepted, do know that it is not the end of the world, there are maaaany more pathways to success guys, so take it as a man (literally, lol) and walk away with pride or try again next year with bigger expectancy towards your next application XD...

Good luck~!

@ Akash :

I'll meet you in "Admitted" blog post.. :D well if u can't find me there..just drop a consolation line @ "Rejected" :( or a word of hope in "Wait-listed" ^^ ? I'll definitely go crazy if i m waitlisted.

Posted by: lydia on March 11, 2010

@ Utkarsh

I currently reside in Singapore.. means.. 3am?? oh no... i m not going to sleep

Posted by: lydia on March 11, 2010

I've just received my decision from another university which has an admit rate of about 28%. I was rejected! Oh God!

As for MIT, my chances of getting in are as low or even lower than 3%. I'm very discouraged but still a little hopeful considering the fact that applying for financial aid hurt my application to this university. Plus, it admits only a handful of international students.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Sunday.

Posted by: D on March 11, 2010

Anyway, whatever the decision, applying to MIT was sooooo worth it. It's an entirely different process than applying to universities in my country. All they use is your final exam results. Sports and responsibilities may count for some, especially those that have gone so far with them. You actually fill out a short form, get a few signatures and you're good to go. No reccomendations, no report cards, no resumes. Experiencing the MIT Freshman Application was a lot of fun. Thanks MIT.

@Utkarsh: hmm.....that DST thing.....jsut checked out a few things about it Wiki......and.....DST in no longer obsereved in our country.....i dont think that i have ever advanced my clock for that concern......but if they do then it would really matter.....lolz... neway buddy.....i think i have joined the grp.... good luck to you..

@lydia : well.....anybody would go mad if that happens with him/her......i m enjoying it out here....aren't you.....i think blogging was the best way to get out of the tension.....rather than to watch movies...!!!! lolz....i suggested you earlier about it..!!!!

This is sooo scary !!!!!! I am going to faint in all situations !!!!!! ohhhhh !!!!

But you know what guys, even if some of us didnt make it to MIT !!!! I am sure that all of us are good and would do something in his/her life.

" Hopes are just like small little free birds flying away, either they reach the nest or they die on the way "

But after all I am sure that one of our free birds will reach a nest even if this one of MIT didn't !!!!

Be optimestic and never fall down, because if you do, there is no coming back !!! SO lets be strong and wish for all of us the best of luck !!!

lets thank MIT for giving us the chance of dreaming of getting in !! actually I know how this period was very hard, but after all ,these days are the ones we are not going to forget !!!
it would stick in the memory forever!!!!

goood luck to all !!!!

It's my Birthday today :D But I don't really feel like celebrating :( It would just be the greatest gift in the world if I get admitted along with wonderful people like all of you smile

Posted by: Keshav on March 11, 2010

People out here are doing wonders to keep off stress. I am doing simple things — watching movies!

• Yesterday, I watched 'The Dark Knight'(2nd time)— Thought if I don't make it to MIT I'll become either a BATMAN or a JOKER! lol

• Today I watched 'The Godfather' (3rd time but after 6 yrs) — Thinking I'll start similar "business" in Las Vegas and demand the "respect" that I may miss now! lol 'gain

• Tomorrow it's 'Pulp Fiction'(3rd time) — ??

Maher: Even if some of" of you don't get in? Reality is that the vast vast majority will not get in, like 90%. As for international applicants: almost 97% of them will NOT be admitted. Just a little dose of reality.

@Anurag - It's weird, but I'm not all that worried anymore either, but that's probably because I have another first choice. Definitely takes the edge off of things. But that still doesn't mean I don't want to know, I wanna know so badly D:

Posted by: Jens '14? on March 12, 2010

Same for me here, I've been stressing about the application for the last three hectic months, now it's alright and I don't feel any stress or adrenaline whatsoever. But MIT is a dream come true for me, it would change my life smile
I'm doing simple things as well..like shredding on my guitar, gaming, listening to music as loud as I want and eating lol :D oh yeah, gotta clean my computer today, the fans are making all kinds of funny noises...

Lydia, Yes I have gone through it and MIT was not my first choice, and I was accepted in Dec. of '08. My point is that all of these happy, and yes, tense, people here are all loving MIT and thanking them for the opportunity, yada yada yada, will be bashing them come Sunday afternoon and evening when they do not get accepted.

Posted by: '13 on March 12, 2010

@^^^^^^^^^^^^

umm....I know that the bashing thing is given!! It is inevitable just like checking on this blog is!!

But for one I am sure I know my result!! MIT ain't my first choice!! If I get in...good...but I'll still wait for my other decisions!! If no...the only thing that would come out of it would be a li'l bit more pressure on my other decisions!!!

Hey by the way....i take it you are having fun at MIT??? Was it all you wished for or did you find any negatives???

Thank you a lot for posting that link. It makes me feel really confident in my application because some of the things he's talked about really put what i wrote into perspective and to me, it seems that i wrote the right things to represent who i am. I really am feeling at ease now but i think that i won't be pleased on sunday and this feeling of ease won't help me when the storm comes.

@Brad
I shared the same feelings you're feeling, but then, even if we are one of the 'perfect match' or 'clear admit' applicants, when the admission committee goes "for every student admitted, you have to let go of {7 or 8} others", then chances fall even more drastically :(

Almost everyday in the last three months I visited the MIT admission blog more than 5 times a day and read the latest and archived posts but never left any comment. Today it's my first comment (also may be the last) in this blog. I am an international applicant from Bangladesh and just wanted to say that it was the best application process I have ever seen. Thanks a lot 'Matt' for keeping us up to date with the process and wasting your lots of valuable time writing for us to make the process as easy as possible. I am really very very grateful to the admission officers and all other staffs who have taken so much pain to take decisions and process our applications.

I feel proud to be a part of such brilliant and extraordinary group of people who have applied to the class of 2014 at MIT. It was a great experience applying to the best Institute in the world for science and technology and it was the only school in US where I applied.
Congratulation in advance to those who will get accepted and consolation for those who will not be accepted.

I believe that the selection committee will not make any mistake in selecting the best 1500 students who will lead the world in the future.

Have a wonderful college life.........

Best of luck to you all.............. smile

And never Give up...... :D

less than a day left... by this time tomorrow, we will all know... so good luck people, may mdv/dt be with all of us... expect the worst but hope for the best... good luck, know what you're worth no matter what the decision is... i'm international, which means 3% rate of success... but why lose hope...

Good luck to you all! Spend the first half of tomorrow celebrating pi-day and eating tons of fruity crusty goodness. It'll (maybe) take your mind (a bit) off of things...

Good luck, and hope to see you guys here soon ^__^

One day left, good luck to all of us! And for those who will be admitted - it's a great gift! If admission means you are among the best ones, it is in the same time a responsability, so do your best, take a chance of what you were offered and make this world a better place for all of us. Greetings from Slovakia!

Posted by: Radovan on March 13, 2010

Hey everyone,

I'd like to wish you all the best of luck on pi day tomorrow. The waiting time is over and its time to see one's hard work paying off. Please do not be discouraged if you were rejected as I know your hard work will pay off at another college where you will excel! Congratulations in advance to those who are accepted; I know you deserve it.

P.S. I advise you to not open this blog tomorrow and not log onto your account until its time...keep yourself distracted through doing something you love...watching TV/movies, making/listening to music, hanging out with friends or just eating! :D
