Attack! by Snively '11

My war diary.

Oh hai world!

Welcome to my very first official MIT blog entry! Please excuse the lolcat/EECS reference, it was a necessary evil.

Surprise and happy New Year! There’s a new kid on the blogs, halfway through the year, because MIT is out there to switch things up and do things people aren’t expecting. I plan on doing a bit of that myself actually, so hopefully you’re up for it.

As you may or may not already know, it’s kind of cold at MIT right now (13 degrees). What does cold mean? Cold means snow!

For hundreds of wide-eyed freshmen who have never seen significant amounts of snow, snow means fun! For all of the upper-classmen who see snow all the time, snow means fun! The only issue with having fun in the snow is that it’s really too cold to go outside and play for any significant length of time. You end up bundling up so much that you can’t actually discern a human form under the down. This makes building igloos, building snow angels, and having snowball fights much more trouble than they’re worth. So, what do MIT students do when they can’t properly enjoy the weather outside?

They enjoy it inside.

After a Burton-Conner house meeting the residents of Conner 2 (second floor of the Conner side of Burton-Conner dorm) decided it was time to declare war on Conner 4 (fourth floor). We began loading ammunition (snowballs) into our magazines (buckets) and discussed the tactical advantages to various attack strategies. We settled on “Run screaming into Conner 4, run down the hall, and throw snowballs at whoever you see.”

Conner 2 is lucky to have a roof that’s accessible from one of its kitchens so that’s where we got the snow for the majority of our snowballs.

After the buckets were full and I’d grabbed my camera (I tried to place myself into the mindset of a war reporter, covering the battle from the front line) we began the charge. No less than 10 members of Conner 2 charged up the two flights of stairs and rammed the door into Conner 4, which was blocked. A small packet proceeded to the 5th floor to try to gain entry from above but all of a sudden the door opened and we flooded in. Some nice Conner 4-ian had opened the door for us. Think back to our attack strategy — “Throw snowballs at whoever you see” — so our nice door-opener was quickly pelted with snow as we ran down the hall where we found . . . another blocked door. After again gaining entry we were attacked maliciously by our initial foe in the brown jacket, who Laura quickly pursued.

The fight then spilled into the hallway where your courageous war reporter was struck by a snowball in a rather inconvenient location, prompting not sympathy but laughter from the warring troops. I was no longer a war reporter, I was a soldier, recording my battle against the opposition!

News that more Conner 4 residents were holed up in a suite reached us and we staged for another attack. After finding somebody with a key to the door I shoved it open and we breached their stronghold. Our first priority was to get out the window to replenish our ammunition. After opening the window and gaining access to the fire escape we were ambushed. I attempted to run back into the kitchen but just as I got in I was struck by a snowball from behind, finishing me off.

In the end, Conner 2 was victorious. Nothing remains to remember the battle by, save for memories and my war diary. Here it is, enjoy.

  7. Aditi says:

    i want snow!!!!NOW! :(

  8. Karen says:

I beg to differ on it being too cold to go outside to play in the snow. I spent no less than four hours outside (from 11pm to 3am) the night of that huge snowstorm, and built an igloo with three entrances and a view of the Boston city skyline :D

But then, I’m pretty sure I must have been a penguin in a past life or something, because cold just doesn’t seem to affect me as much as it does everyone else.

I’m still the only ’11 girl blogging. Woohoo!
That being said, snow is great indoors AND outdoors. Sounds fun.

  9. Travis says:

YEAH!! I’m so glad you are officially on-line. Been reading your blog consistently for a while now; keep up the awesome posts!

And why was I not informed about this battle?
Congrats on being official! I now have a reliable online news source documenting the awesomeness that takes place on my hall when I’m not around. Looking forward to many future adventures and amusements.

  12. anonymous says:

I heard about this epic battle from the perspective of a Conner 4-ian. It apparently went on longer, with snowballs raining down on Conner 2 from above….

  13. sara '11 says:

haha i bet yuki was all over this… congratulations on the blog michael!

  17. Cassandra says:

    Hey Snively!

What was the ‘Burton Conner Rule’?

  18. Vytautas says:

Hm… looks like Conner 4 didn’t take advantage of their higher land in this fatal battle :D

  19. Piper '11 says:

    Yay Snively!

Speaking of snowless people, I didn’t see snow until I got here, and it was AWESOME.

  20. Harrison says:

“New kid on the blogs”? I’m fairly sure you plagiarized that from Paul…

  21. Twilight Bob says:

So you do have snowball fights! As a Massachusetts boy exiled to Southern California (I was born in Newton), I’ve always lamented the fact that I have never been in a proper snowball fight. One more reason to matriculate–if I get in, that is.

  22. Bassil says:

Conner 4 must’ve had limited ammunition, and had to wait “until they saw the whites of their eyes.”

  23. Anonymous says:

That looks like it was a big mess to clean up. Just saying…

  24. Tong says:

    Yay Snively!
I’ve been waiting to see what picture you’d use for the profile heading.
Snowball fights are always fun. I guess living in New Orleans doesn’t really give me a chance to do that. I’ve been missing it for four years. But hey, I’m going to Boston!

  25. Duffy says:

    Oh, the carnage!

  26. nick says:

I live in Maine so I have one important piece of advice: Gortex gloves. They will keep you warm and dry and your snow cold. Other than that Snowballs+targets(people)=fun!

  27. Kevin X says:

GREAT first post there Snively. It was really well written and sounded so much fun ^.^

Looking forward to more 1337 blog posts (and lolcat references).

  31. Priya says:

    Yay!
It’s great that you’re finally on here!

but one question: what happens to your other blog?

  32. Priya says:

But when you put your mouse over the ‘blogs’ on the top strip of the site — it doesn’t have your name on the list that drops down yet. :(

OHH and also when you click on #12 on top, nothing happens either, so meh..

  33. Anonymous says:

  36. asm says:

I must admit, I thought I was seeing things when I saw “posted by Snively ’11” on the main page. I was like, “Whoa, WHAT??? Hey, he finally got an MIT blog!” I thought I was dreaming.

Speaking of that, it was inevitable wasn’t it? I mean, when an MIT adcom has a dream about you…

    lol KTHXBAI

  37. Will says:

  42. I have a friend who lives in that suite of Conner 4… she remembers this but doesn’t know who you are.. but I know..

Hi Snively!! I read your whole CPW blog .. in one sitting .. it was intense. You certainly do a good job of making BC sound awesome.. I have always considered myself an EC type person .. but perhaps I’ll reconsider

Peace (except for maybe more war),
    ~Donald Guy

  43. Edna says:

Is it just me or are Paul and Snively at war?
Paul and his fellowers are like stalkers on Snively’s own personal blog. Every time something happens, Paul or one of his fellowers run after Snively. Snive snive.

    BLOG WAR!

    You know who I need.

    Regards,
    Edna

  44. Piper '11 says:

    @DonaldGuy: EC RULES!!!

    /propaganda

  45. Paul says:

Edna – I am officially amused. I started reading Snively’s personal blog long before either of us became official bloggers…so, naturally, I still read it today. Anyway, I don’t need to stalk Snively, I know exactly where he lives. :D

As for “fellowers,” I’m flattered you think I have any. wink

    Make blogs, not war!

  46. Sam (xy) says:

Hey, what would your name be if you could only remember a few digits of pi?

    Three-point-one-four-one-fively.

    Oh, that was sad.

But what’s not sad is you blogging on MIT Admissions. Congratulations!

  47. anion says:

    lol…awesome!

  48. Masud says:

YAY!!! I always new that MIT would be the place I would find crazily sane people who would engage in peaceful wars! Wow..this post has two oxymorons! MWAHAHAHAHAHA of course…i am crazily sane myself

  49. Piper '11 says:

    Amen, Paul!

Though how come PAUL gets followers? I WANT MINIONS, DANGIT!

    Conner 2, here i come!

  51. Muz says:

Cool, you have an official MIT blog now. Congrats! smile

Heheh, I’d love to get into a snowball fight. I’m pretty much the strategist for some local clans, my paintball group, and whatever soccer team I’m on in the weekends, so you guys better watch out when/if I get there wink

  52. Jon says:

    roommate blog FTW!

  53. job says:

SNIVELY!! YAY! i’ve been following your other blog (which always keeps me laughing). so its basically amazing that you’re officially an MIT blogger. and this blog is, as always, hilarious.

  54. Danny Trinh says:

    happysnowcat approves.

That was semi-epic, but it lost a little thunder. The better battle strategy would have been to lure them outside (collateral damage minimized) and hose them down. Then barricade the doors. Kind of reminded me about that scene in the movie Munich when a commando team rushes a house.

  55. we made have lost that battle, but a few days later we got them from above while they were making snowmen on their roof. it was legendary.

  56. waleed says:

    a great thing
