So, about a month ago, I submitted my last exam for the year in Johnson Athletic Center which marked the end of a very, very, very long first year at MIT. So, like thefirst and second two times, I’m going to finish off the year by giving you all a full run down of everything that happened during this last semester…but with pictures (because I like pictures).
Part 14: January Shenanigans
So as you may know by now, MIT has this silly one month period during January called the Independent Activities Period (better known as IAP – learn more about it here, here, and here) where you pretty much get to do whatever you want with your life for the whole month of January. So for me, I spent this month learning some new skills while finishing up the second half of 18.02A.
But before leaving for Boston, I decided to go on a hiking trip with some of my friends to a place called Old Rag back in VA.
Trip to Old Rag!
Ice and rock climbing don't mix well
...
Cute little red berry
Loved this view
5 kids on a rock
Halfway point...
Somehow made it to the top...
...and it started snowing..
...which isn't the best when you wanna go back down...
And back to the bubble I go
Boston!
Never seen the infinite so...empty
Home sweet jail!
Does 0-60 in a millisecond.
Maybe deep down I could be a course 2...(I messed up building this three times even while reading the instructions)
And so it starts💔🥀
First IAP grocery run. Idk what Yumn was looking for here.
Never felt as cold as I did during the walk back
Chef Jaelynn was whipping it up
Uno break
I'm surprised we didn't burn down New House
Eating out is more fun than making food though
...especially when Spencer finds some Boba...
...and even more especially when you take a bus all the way to Harvard's campus for some froyo
Pretty good froyo. Was it worth the trip though? Who knows.
I also don't recommend taking a swim class before your calc lectures during the coldest month of the year...
Speaking of calc lecture....🥀
...the 1am pset sessions still never ended...
Comically large elevator button
Why we were watching a documentary about tarantulas at the start of class one day? Couldn't tell you.
Inspirational words before our final
The last great calc lock-in at midnight before the final...
Another GIR defeated
Perpendicular cylinder intersections still haunt my dreams at night
Snow!!!
Perfect day for a snowboarding trip with my Big in Chocolate City. Shout out Ugo!
I still find the name for this town pretty silly. Its like the Waluigi of Massachusetts.
Was insanely packed that day...
The amount of times this elevator thing broke down was gonna be the end of me.
My favorite person on campus.
I fell after taking this.
Goated duo
The sad ride back home:(
Ugo also turns out to be a wonderful poet so here's a sample of a poem he wrote for our trip that I wanted to showcase:
So yea I somehow learned how to snowboard that day and left with a pretty bruised tailbone:
Story time: So in order to get back to the train station we needed to take this bus right. And the bus had only 2 times it cycled between the mountain and the station in the afternoon: 4PM and 6PM. So we had planned on leaving at 4PM to play it safe. So before we left I wanted to get a vid of me snowboarding down so I did like my last run at 3:30PM. Got to the bottom of the mountain and realized I never pressed record… So here I am thinking: “dang – I didn’t get a single vid of my first time snowboarding”. Turns out, by the time we got to the bus station we missed the bus by like 30secs cause it really left at like 3:55PM. Pretty much a blessing and a curse cause now I had two hours to get a new video before we absolutely had to make the last bus. (We actually also missed the second bus and had to get driven by one of the mountain staff to the train station with like 10 seconds to spare before the last train left for the night…but that’s a story for another time).
Part 15: The Professors Strike Back
So yea. IAP ended and it was time for spring semester - despite the cold weather
Went out for dinner with Ugo one last time before actually starting classes
Most important question we had to prove in 6.1200 (Math for Computer Science)
I don't believe in graph theory. It's a lie made up by big graphing corporations to sell more graphing paper.
I do believe in brain rot memes though.
POV me and Jaelynn don't know how to make whatever piano they wanted us to make in 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism) because we didn't read the instructions...
We got our speaker to somehow work though!
POV my 1010 lab is failing 1 test case and I don't know why...
...and Spencer spots out the single typo I made.
How do I begin to explain that this picture came from me spending an hour trying to find out why a specific mouse was misplaced on a 4th dimensional game board...
Part 16: The Good, the Bad, and the Random
My second home on campus - the Morningside Academy for Design (MIT MAD)!
Got to continue exploring vertical agriculture with my DesignPlus group!
Future plant growing project coming soon maybe??
For some reason I agreed to go ice skating in the Johnson rink with my calc group a few times and just so EVERYONE is aware: Yumn was taking a skating class in this meanwhile I was on the ice for the first time and notice who's holding on to the railing😮💨 (I fell 30 seconds after this picture)
I managed to fall quite a few times actually...
FPOP counselors spotted!
Sarah spotted!
Phone thief
Was I leaning against the railing or did I manage to stay standing with only my skates? I'll let y'all decide
Found one of my SD cards too...thank goodness they're washer and dryer proof...
Each of these boxes is a pair that went missing that I had to replace...I might have a problem...
Everything she was experiencing in this photo...I understood.
Messages to everyone's favorite physics professor!
Ice cream outing with a little committee that's gonna design something that I'll blog about later...
Cone bigger than her head
Decided to surprise our calc TA with a cake - love this guy
My roommate surprises me with something new everyday
Squirrel invading a blogger meeting.
To be a squirrel enjoying the breeze from an air vent under the architecture building...
You see something new on this campus everyday too?
Breakfast at 1pm
Ugo spotted...building a rollercoaster?
Ellie spotted!
Serra spotted!
Yumn spotted (with her signature pink)
Who let this person brain rot in the library
Chipotle but not on the rooftop garden.
Working hard and hardly working in the bamboo garden
Also had fun setting up for this year's 50th annual Ebony Affair Gala!
Part 17: Spreak!
Spring break took too long to come by. Spent most of it doing things on campus but I ended up escaping for one day to go on a day trip to Newburyport with Spencer and Jaelynn
Trip to Newburyport
Now I can say I've been to Unicorn street.
Spot the odd ones out
Found this little art museum with some beautiful paintings.
Words of wisdom
Jaelynn Polaroids>
It took me like 10 different attempts to get a picture of a bird taking off with my camera and she got one on her first try with the polaroid...
Some snippets from my camera:
Snippets part two:
And then we ended the trip by getting food at Roxy's in Cambridge
To be a random Turkey walking around Harvard campus...
Also got me a little plant!
This guy is gonna make a nice complement to the aquarium I'm putting together in my dorm next semester...
Part 18: That Weird Period between Spring Break and Finals
Weather got warmer. Campus got livelier. World became more colorful. And finals were looming around the corner.
Skipping Friday lectures for a Boston trip!
For whatever reason Rozalen didn't beleive that the smoot measurements on the bridge were accurate so she had to test it herself....
Found a neat bookstore cafe
also explored the Boston Public Library
This place feels more like a museum than a library
Behind the scenes of preparation for the Boston marathon
Visited the esplanade too!
Crazy seeing MIT from the other side
Only spencer would sit on the side where the boards of the dock are clearly warping into the water
I also got to shoot the SpringFest recap video for the Student Events Board and snuck in a few photos of Dayglow and his crew while I was filming
Somehow got convinced to go to formal in the rain...
Spotted a guy scootering across the bridge, in his pjs, wearing crocs, with no socks on. Quite the interesting sight.
The formal was at the observatory in Prudential tower but it was so rainy that the only view we had was the foggy clouds in the back of this picture
Still managed to get some photos on Yumn's digi
A picture of someone taking a picture of someone taking a picture of a picture. Aka (Picture)^4
Nothing better than a rainy formal
Also attended ring delivery for the class of 2027. Why were twelve 28's at ring delivery for the 27s? That's a blog for later...
MIT iFair! Didn't get too many photos sadly but a lot of fun booths and performances from all the international groups on campus.
So much more sun now!
And so much more green!
Part 19: The Second Great Finals War
So eventually…it was that time again. Finals season was back. I beat the institute during first semester, but this semester the stakes were higher. We had a total of 3 battles: 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism), 6.1010 (Fundamentals of Programming), and 6.1200 (Discrete Math for Comp Sci). Would’ve been four but CMS.100 (Intro to Media Studies) had a final paper and presentation instead of a test so we’re only counting three.
Last day of school was on a Tuesday. So, the Grand Lock-In began with reviewing all of 8.02 from the beginning on 9 large chalkboards in the Green Building Lecture Hall from 18.02A.
!!!
Got my signature 6.101 sticker on the last day of recitation
:(
Soooo locked out
But the struggle was real.
Turns out the projectors in lecture halls are pretty easy to access so we basically discovered an almost 200inch screen that made it easy to get disctracted...
But when we weren't distracted we were obviously locked in on Mohamed's 8.02 review videos
Or maybe we weren't
Yea we definitely weren't
And of course in the middle of all this my old iPad decided to give up on me and stopped working...so we replaced him! Everyone meet Gregory: my sole savior during this hellish week.
So, at some point, Tuesday turned into Friday and the battles had begun.
Friday. 8.02. 9AM. Johnson Athletic Center. Just me, a pencil I had to borrow from a friend because I forgot you need those to actually take an exam, and the life-altering memory of the reviews I watched from Mohamed
3 hours later. Noon. Test Complete. Boom. Knocked out. Beat that battle and had two more to go. Richie: 1, Institvte: 0
The masses return...
<Spot the difference if you can
Dreaded stairs💔
At least someone was happy for this...
Sigh
Oh we also had an end of the year party for the bloggers this week (shoutout Ellie)
And blogger Captain Jebby!
Next was 6.1010 on Monday and then 6.1200 on Tuesday so I had the weekend to study both but 6.1200 had ALL my attention because I knew that battle was gonna be rough…
Monday. 6.1010. 1:30PM. Johnson Athletic Center. Just me, another pencil I had to borrow from a friend because I forgot you need those to actually take an exam again, and my belief in the power of environment diagrams
3 hours later. 4:30PM. Test Complete. Boom. Knocked out. Beat that battle and had one more to go. Richie: 2, Institvte: 0
Post exam boba debriefs part 2.
New House exec also gave out some free food in the middle of all this so that was fun
Spencer was super locked in on 1200.
And then it was time…
The 6.1200 final was almost as scary as my 5.111 (Chemistry) final. But if I survived 5.111 I lowkey could survive anything…including 6.1200. And I did.
Tuesday. 6.1200. 1:30PM. Johnson Athletic Center. Just me, a third pencil I had to borrow from a friend (Spencer this time), and me praying that the 6.1200 professors would not force me to write a mathematical proof for why the sky is blue and the Earth is round (Though that probably would’ve been the nicer treatment)
3 hours later. 4:30PM. Test Complete. Boom. Knocked out somehow??. Beat that battle and won the second great finals war. Richie: 3, Institvte: 0.
3 crib sheets full of formulas and I still felt like nothing could be done about this final...
At this point I just accepted whatever fate would be bestowed on to me.
Sigh.
😔
WE MADE IT OUT THO! (Featuring Hubert)
And got some free ice cream outside the student center
FREEDOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM (I have 6 more finals seasons to go – plus who knows how many more for grad school💔)
Part 20: Impossible Challenge – Pack Your Whole Life Away in 24 Hours
After that final, I had about 24 hours to finish up on packing my room and getting all my stuff to our storage pod. But before that, Chocolate City had a little celebration for our seniors in the New House courtyard.
Life is so much better when there are no finals to deal with.
How many MIT students does it take to work a popcorn machine
Courtyard takeover
plus some speeches from our departing seniors
plus whatever was happening here...
The memories🥀
Delusion told me I could pack everything in the two storage totes I came with. Reality said I somehow acquired several U-Haul boxes worth of more stuff this year.
Can't even begin to explain how having a hold of one of these carts or a roll of packing tape is like discovering an 80 pound block of gold during move out
To be a pair of ducks on Briggs field that don't have to worry about packing...🥀
Last trip to central to drop my bike off at a frat
Soooo it turns out that I somehow left my wallet with the ID I would need to travel under a beanbag in the banana lounge for two weeks (can y'all tell I have a problem with losing things)...
...and I didn't realize until midnight on the night before I had to leave...
...and of course I stored my bike earlier that day so this was quite the trek/discovery in the middle of the night...
Caught this nice view of the dome though
Andddddd back to airport
Almost out...
Almost out........
POV me when I got back home to my bed
Almost out.....................
Goodbye Boston
Hello again DC
Part 21: This is Where I Yap About What I Learned and What Not
At the beginning of the year, DoingWell at MIT had us all write letters to ourselves that would automatically be sent to our MIT emails at the end of the year. This letter finally came back about a month ago and reading it pretty much summarizes all the different experiences I’ve had this past year. So instead of trying to write up some new summary, I’ll share that letter here in hopes that it explains all the ways I think I’ve changed this year and resonates with anyone going through some sort of new academic experience.
The following is a letter from the past. It was written on August 30, 2024 .
Dear Future Me,
By the time this message reaches you, I’m sure you’ve probably grown in ways you would’ve never expected yourself to. You’ve probably built communities and relationships with people that you never expected to become close with and have learned a lot about who you are along the way. By now you’ve probably realized how hard psets really are compared to how I think they are as I’m writing this. You’ve probably edited hundreds of photos and videos and posted blogs on the admissions page that have probably inspired people you will never meet. You’ve probably learned more about our world’s different systems and how you want to change it. You’re probably stressed right now. Or maybe you’re satisfied with everything. You may be confused or lost. But at the end of the day remember that getting to MIT was only a dream at some point that you ended up making happen. Cherish that. Be proud of it. And continue to find ways you can improve yourself and the lives of those around you. Nothing is too far out of your reach and the best time to start making change is now, but always remember the people that helped you along the way. Because without them, life wouldn’t be the same. Congratulations on making it through your first year and good luck on the rest!
With that I’m really grateful to have been able to share my freshman year with you guys through all these photos and looking forward to sharing more of my stories here in the years to come!
