We require official high/secondary school transcripts, as well as any college transcripts, to be sent by your school counselor. If available, your counselor should also send a letter of recommendation and a school profile.
Counselors should submit transcripts/materials through the MIT-specific Secondary School Report (SSR) recommendation form, which you can manage through the MIT application portal.
If you do not have a school counselor, you can ask another school official to send materials and fulfill the requirement. Transcripts must be sent by a school counselor/official to be considered official, and should include three years of subject grades if available.
How to submit the SSR, official transcript(s), and other materials
Recommendation materials must be sent to MIT directly by your recommenders. Materials can be requested and submitted through the MIT application portal:
- Ask your school counselor/official to be your recommender early, so they have time to prepare their materials.
- Add your school counselor/official with the “School Counselor / Secondary School Report” type in the “Recommendations” section of the MIT application. You can add recommenders at any point before submitting your application.
- When you add a counselor recommender, we immediately email them a personalized link to an MIT-specific SSR recommendation form in which they can upload their materials. Let your counselor know to expect this email from MIT Admissions.
School counselors should complete the MIT SSR form regardless of how they plan to submit your transcript/materials, so that we can match materials to your application. Submitting the MIT SSR recommendation form automatically fulfills the SSR component, and materials uploaded through the MIT SSR form are automatically matched to your application. However, recommenders can indicate on the form if they will submit materials via other accepted methods such as third-party services01 We accept materials submitted by your school through services such as Naviance, SCOIR, Parchment, Cialfo, and MaiaLearning. or email02 Recommender materials sent via email should be sent as PDF attachments to [email protected], with the applicant’s full name and MIT application reference ID number in the subject line of the email. , and we accept other SSR forms your counselor may prefer to send. Materials sent outside of the MIT recommendation form take longer to process, but your application will not be disadvantaged.
Submit your application by the deadline; you don’t have to wait for your recommenders to submit their materials first. We ask recommenders to submit by the deadline as well, but materials that arrive later are still accepted and attached to your application.03 If you send us a copy of your transcript while we are waiting for your official transcript to be submitted and processed, we will add it to your application as a placeholder until we receive your official transcript. You can continue to manage recommenders in your application portal after you apply.
