韓国人として習った本当の日本 an essay about understanding japan
私はアメリカで生まれましたが、両親と祖父母の生まれはソウルです。祖父母から戦時中の貧しい暮らしや、日本政府によって大変な思いをした話を聞いたことがあります。今でも親戚のおじと話すと、その頃の感情が続いていると感じます。去年の夏休みのあと、おじとこんな話をしました。 「ジュンホ、夏休みどうだった?」 「楽したかったです。MIT で研究したり日本に旅行したりしました。」 「そりゃいいね!でもなんで日本に行ったの?他の国の方が楽しいじゃない?」 おじのように私も韓国人であることを誇りに思っていますが、日本について否定的な意見が持っていません。「国際的な現代に、なぜ親戚は日本のことを誤解しているのか」とよく考えました。そして、日本の歴史と文化を習うため、日本語を勉強しようと決心しました。 両親は戦後の生活を経験していますので、おじと同じ考えを持っていました。でもある日、両親は韓国で結婚式に行く時、私が日本語の勉強を始めたことを聞いて、日本にも寄ることにしました。旅行のあと、両親の心が変わったとすぐに感じられました。「ジュンホ、日本の自然は美しい!それに日本人は礼儀正しくて韓国人より丁寧だよ。」両親は褒め続けました。私が日本語を勉強し始めたことで、両親も日本に興味を持つようになり、その結果、心が変わったのです。 去年の夏休みに私は両親と日本に旅行しました。今でもその思い出が私の心をいっぱいにします。私たちが駅で迷った時迷わず手伝ってくれた知らない日本人。旅館でアルバイトをしていた韓国語専攻の大学生。旅館のおばあさんが一生懸命作ってくれた和食の朝ごはん。新幹線からみた美しい景色と感動。 この旅行を通して、日本人は助け合いの心を大切にしているということ知りました。私たちが今住んでいる世界は戦争のあった頃の世界とは違う。日本は完璧な国ではないが、私の両親を見ると、韓国人も本当の日本に気づけるはずだと思います。時間がかかるかもしれませんが、いつかおじの心も変わると信じています。 (ボストンの日本語スピーチコンテストのため。前川先生、文法や構成について直してくださってありがとうございます。) -
